The United States’ spot atop Group E is in peril after they played to a sloppy and disappointing 1-1 draw against the Netherlands at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Ranked No. 1 in the world and established as pre-tournament favorites, the Americans put a surprising lineup on the pitch. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski named an unchanged side from the win over Vietnam, leaving Rose Lavelle on the bench despite Lavelle having recovered fully from her knee injury.

Under that setup, the United States were putrid through the first 45 minutes, unable to find any spark as the Dutch midfield controlled the match. The Netherlands went ahead in the 17th minute as Jill Roord finished a low shot from distance against a scattered U.S. defense.
The USWNT were unable to find a response before the break, and they went into halftime trailing in a Women’s World Cup match for the first time since 2011, a run of 17 matches.
Lavelle would enter at the break, but that was the only sub Andonovski made the entire match. The USWNT were better in the second half, and Lindsey Horan found an equalizer in the 62nd minute with a thumping header. They poured on the pressure late but ran out of time to find a winner.

Vlatko Andonovski got his starting lineup all wrong
There were understandable questions why Rose Lavelle wasn’t in the USA starting lineup for this game, and it’s clear those concerns were well-founded.
Lavelle’s introduction in the second half was a spark, and her assist on Lindsey Horan’s equalizer proved that even when she doesn’t have her absolute best stuff, she’s still a vital part of this USWNT midfield.
Additionally, Julie Ertz has to be in the U.S. midfield. Andi Sullivan was poor throughout this match, and Ertz herself looked lost in defense. Keeping Alana Cook on the bench to have Sullivan in midfield made little sense before the match, and the decision remained unjustified at the conclusion of the 90 minutes.

The USWNT now must win vs Portugal or be left vulnerable
The U.S. have put themselves in a perilous position with this draw. While they’re level on points, the Dutch now get to finish group stage play against Vietnam while the U.S. have to play Portugal. This means that, in order to win the group, the U.S. realistically have to both beat Portugal and maintain their goal differential advantage.
If they fail to do so, then they could be vulnerable not only in terms of winning the group but also of qualifying. Should Portugal collect three points against Vietnam, then defeat would see the U.S. miss out. After the unconvincing performance against the Netherlands, that’s an unlikely but not unthinkable result.
The U.S. will have much preferred to have their knockout stage status wrapped up Wednesday night, but that was not the case, and now they have a job to do on the final day.
The U.S. showed they can grind out a result on grit alone
Despite the first-half struggles, the U.S. managed to gut out a point against a high-quality European side.
The United States dominated the attacking overall, producing 18 shots to just five for the Netherlands. The U.S. put together 1.34 expected goals while the Dutch had just 0.33.
For the U.S. to have controlled the attacking third to such an extent even with the ugly optics of the match shows how much they can dominate a game without even looking the part. Both U.S. wingers struggled mightily and they still created significant chances, especially across the final 20 minutes when they pummeled the Dutch back line.

The situation for the U.S. is clear — anything less than a win against Portugal would not only be disappointing, it also would be perilous. The draw with the Netherlands leaves them vulnerable, even if they remain favorites to qualify for the knockout stage.
If the U.S. beat Portugal, all they have to do is maintain their goal differential advantage (currently +2) over the Dutch and they top the group. If they fail to emerge victorious, then the Netherlands will almost surely win the group, as they get to take on Vietnam in the final group stage match.
Failing to win the group could leave the U.S. matched up against Sweden in the Round of 16, an opponent against which they have a lot of bad blood. Better to avoid that meeting if they can.
Leaving it to the final day is never a good way to play things, and the U.S. now have to sweat it out, even if they’re still likely to make it through. Victory against the Dutch would have been ideal in terms of sorting out their World Cup survival.

90+4 min: There’s a clash of heads as Rose Lavelle and Danielle van de Donk are both left dazed. Van de Donk is down for a significant amount of time while she receives treatment, and Lavelle is woozy as she gets up and collects herself.
90+3 min: The U.S. work the ball into a dangerous position at the edge of the six-yard box, but a few poor touches mean they can’t get a shot off until Andi Sullivan fires it miles high from a good distance out.
The Dutch make a change, withdrawing Jill Roord in favor of Renate Jansen.
90th min: Five minutes of stoppage time are shown. The Dutch have weathered the late U.S. storm so far.
86th min: Chance, USA! Alex Morgan’s header is blocked just in front of the goal mouth! A cross from Sophia Smith down the right finds her but Sherida Spitse gets in the way. The entire last five minutes (at least) have been played in the Dutch final third, and the U.S. are pummeling the Netherlands penalty area with crosses and lofted deliveries from deep. Do they have enough time to find a winner?
85th min: The United States are pouring on the pressure now, with their third consecutive corner. The first two result in a multitude of half-chances, but nobody can get a good look on goal. The third corner is finally cleared and finally pressure is relieved.
82nd min: Chance, USA! Trinity Rodman misses a glorious chance to take the lead! Just minutes after the Dutch fail to capitalize on an opening, Rodman now comes up short. Sophia Smith feeds her through, and Rodman is at a tight angle, but she has a small window to finish at the far post. Instead, the shot drags just inches wide of the woodwork.

80th min: Chance, Netherlands! Oh my, Julie Ertz lost her mark but she recovers to make a goal-saving block! It’s a glorious buildup from the Dutch attack, as a vertical ball unlocks the U.S. back line, and the cutback produces a wide-open shot.
Ertz was in no-man’s land marking nobody, while trailers snuck up on her, but she recovered brilliantly to get her body in the way of the hit. That’s a mistake from Ertz, but she makes up for it.
70th min: This game has flipped on its head. The U.S. are completely dominating play now, winning every loose ball and every 50/50 tackle. The Dutch are the ones who look tired now. It’s like the U.S. needed something to wake them up, and Danielle van de Donk was the one to do it.
The Dutch make a change, as Damaris Egurrola comes on to replace Katja Snoeijs, who was on in place of injured striker Lineth Beerensteyn.
67th min: Chance, USA! Alex Morgan nearly gives the U.S. the lead! She has the ball in the back of the net, but the flag is up for offside. It came after Trinity Rodman picked a defender’s pocket on the right flank, and Morgan just couldn’t hold her run. Replay shows the call was correct.

60th min: Lindsey Horan is down receiving treatment after a thumping challenge from Danielle van de Donk, who just pulverizes the U.S. midfielder with a body blow. Horan takes a long time to get up and looks very shaken. Those two are club teammates at Lyon.
Horan comes back on eventually and play continues. A few moments later the referee has to step in as the two exchange heated words. Horan is very unhappy with the challenge, but the referee brings them together and makes them play nice.

50th min: Five minutes into the first half, and not much — if anything — has changed from the first half. The Dutch are holding possession and the U.S. can’t really get much going, chasing the Dutch ball carriers around the field like ghosts.
Rose Lavelle is booked for a hard foul on Jackie Groenen, which is fair in a vacuum, but also ridiculous given the referee let a lot go in the first half, and Lavelle’s only just come on. Lack of consistency.
Kickoff: Both sides make one substitution as we get back under way. Rose Lavelle comes on as anticipated for the U.S. replacing Savannah DeMelo, which is a like-for-like change. The Dutch take off Stefanie van der Gragt, replaced by Aniek Nouwen, which seems like it may have been injury forced.
The substitution doesn’t make a ton of sense for the U.S. in truth. Lavelle needed to come on, but DeMelo is like-for-like, so the shape is the same, and something needed to change other than just personnel. Harsh on DeMelo who was decently bright in the first half, especially early on.

There is a pair of obvious halftime changes to be made here. Andonovski should bring Alana Cook on, allowing Julie Ertz to move into midfield, and he should bring Rose Lavelle on for Andi Sullivan. If he fails to do this, there will be more issues after the break.

USA head coach Vlatko Andonovski was thought ready to make two tweaks to his strongest lineup against Vietnam, with Rose Lavelle starting in midfield and Julie Ertz moving back to her natural defensive midfield spot. Here against the toughest group opponent they’ll face, the expectation was that we’ll see the strongest possible XI for the United States and the one we’re likely to see moving forward through the tournament.
Instead, the USWNT boss pulled a fast one, and surprised everyone by naming the exact same starting lineup that was deployed in the tournament opener.
