Making his ring return, undefeated Vergil Ortiz Jr goes up against Fredrick Lawson on Saturday, January 6 at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The pair squares off in the main event bout at middleweight. A day before the fight show the athletes step on the scales to make it official.
As the fight was originally announced at super welterweight, and the fighters were expected to make the required 154-pound limit (70 kg). Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19 KOs) was expected to move up a weight class and fight for the first time at super welterweight. Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs) previously fought at super welterweight twice.
At the weigh-in, Vergil Ortiz Jr weighed-in at 156 lbs, making the contracted limit. The fight was “re-announced” at middleweight, which has the limit of 160 pounds (72.5 kg). Fredrick Lawson showed 152.4 lbs. The contest is scheduled for 12 rounds.
In the co-main event, former two-time world title challenger Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs) faces Ohara Davies (25-2, 18 KOs) for the interim WBA super lightweight title. The fighters tipped the scales at 140 lbs and 139. lbs, respectively. The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds.
Also on the card, Arnold Barboza Jr. (28-0, 10 KOs) came in at 139.4 lbs for his super lightweight bout against Xolisani Ndongeni (31-3, 18 KOs), who was 139.2 lbs. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds.
Plus, Raul Curiel (13-0, 11 KOs) defends his NABF welterweight title against Elias Diaz (12-1, 7 KOs). The fighters were 146.8 lbs and 146.2 lbs, respectively.
In addition, Emiliano Gandara came in at 161.6 lbs for his pro debut against Isaac Matamoros (1-1), 164 lbs. The bout is scheduled for four rounds at super welterweight.
Johnny Canas (2-0, 1 KO) and Frank Brown (3-3-2, 1 KOs) did not weigh-in for their announced super lightweight bout. Whether the bout is still featured on the card is expected to be confirmed shortly.
