It continues their miserable luck at international tournaments, where they have never progressed past the group stage and have not won a match in 28 years.
Kevin Csoboth scored in the tenth minute of stoppage time, the latest-ever strike at a European Championship, to break Scottish hearts and captain Robertson looked crestfallen in his post-match interview.
Speaking to the BBC, the Liverpool full-back said: “There’s nothing really to say to be honest. We gave it everything.
“We knew we had to win this game, and they’ve hit us on the counter-attack.
“It could have gone either way, but that’s football – that’s how it goes. It will take a long time to get over this one.
“We had a lot of possession, first half, without doing anything with it.
“We had to find that cutting edge and go for it a wee bit more.
“We did go for it, but we got sucker-punched. A draw wasn’t going to be enough realistically.

Scotland finished Euro 2024 with one point from their three games
“Tonight and for a long time we have to get over this. It’s a tough one. It’s devastating.
“All the lads are absolutely gutted. I will say thank you to all the supporters; sorry for letting you all down.”
Scotland’s tournament started in disastrous fashion, losing 5-1 to Germany in the opening match of the tournament which meant that qualification was always going to be difficult due to the goal difference.
A 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the second match rekindled hope that they might be able to sneak into the knockout round by finishing third and being one of the four best third-placed teams.
But at the MHPArena on Sunday night, the Tartan Army looked stifled by the occasion as they needed to go and beat Hungary but failed to truly test Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
They did not even manage a shot in the first half, though they forced a late save out of the RB Leipzig goalkeeper through Grant Hanley but he was effort was easily swatted away.
Just moments after that, Hungary launched a devastating counter-attack from a Scottish corner led by Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, who teed up Csoboth to grab the winner.
