BOSTON — In the ultimate “welcome to the big leagues” moment, on the day he was called up to the Blue Jays, in his very first Major League at-bat at the age of 24, Davis Schneider homered into the back row of Green Monster seats at Fenway Park.
The first big league hit for the Blue Jays second baseman, a solo shot that had an exit velocity of 106.2 mph, was one of five home runs for Toronto in a 7-3 victory over the Red Sox on Friday night.
It came in the second inning on a 1-1 pitch from Boston starter James Paxton and gave the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.
The victory gives Toronto some breathing room in the postseason race. With two games left in this series, the Blue Jays now hold a three-game lead over the Red Sox for the third AL Wild Card spot.
After naming Schneider the starting second baseman for the series opener, Blue Jays manager John Schneider called the 2017 28th-round Draft pick, “the typical Minor League success story.”
