West Ham United has successfully acquired centre-back Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers, securing him on a seven-year contract. The transfer, valued at £40 million, reunites Kilman with his former manager Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium.
Kilman’s enthusiastic outlook
Kilman shared his excitement with the club’s media channels, stating, “It’s an incredible honor to join West Ham United. Once I became aware of their interest, I was determined to seize this opportunity, and now I’m ecstatic to be part of this club.”
Reflecting on his previous tenure with Lopetegui, Kilman remarked, “Working under Julen at Wolves was a great experience. He’s a top-tier coach, and I gained a lot from his mentorship. I’m confident that I’ll continue to develop my skills under his management here.”
Kilman highlighted the significance of his move, seeing West Ham as a substantial club and a natural progression in his career. He expressed particular excitement about playing before the dedicated fans at London Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 62,500.
Additionally, Kilman discussed his conversations with both Lopetegui and West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten. “The club’s ambition and vision for the future were very motivating. They aim to make a big impact, and that’s inspiring for a new player coming in.”
Kilman’s path and reunion with Lopetegui
Kilman becomes the third new signing in the Lopetegui era, following the acquisitions of dynamic winger Luis Guilherme and experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. The 27-year-old defender spent six seasons at Wolves, amassing 151 appearances and captaining the team at the time of his transfer.
This move marks a return to London for Kilman, who was born in the city. His former club, Maidenhead United, will benefit financially from the transfer, receiving a significant portion of the fee.
Kilman’s addition is expected to strengthen West Ham’s squad as they gear up for the new season. His experience and leadership are anticipated to enhance the team’s performance, and fans eagerly await his debut at the London Stadium.
