The most thrilling rivalry in MLS returns to the pitch this Saturday as LAFC welcome the LA Galaxy to BMO Field for the Los Angeles derby, affectionately dubbed El Trafico.
Leading the Western Conference standings, the Galaxy have been reinvigorated by quality new signings after missing the playoffs last year. Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec have slotted into opposing wing spots to great effect, combining for five goal contributions in the young season.
Paintsil has been the most impressive, owning four of those contributions evenly split between goals and assists. The 26-year-old Ghanaian international has been electric since joining from Belgian side Genk. It’s helped the Galaxy to the top of the table, without defeat through six matches in league play and scoring the second-most goals in MLS thus far, just one behind leaders Inter Miami.
After reaching the MLS Cup final in each of the last two seasons, winning the title in 2022, LAFC have regressed some after the departure of Carlos Vela and the spotty start for reigning Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga. They have won just twice in the opening six matches of the year, suffering an embarrassing defeat to a sputtering Colorado Rapids side last time out.
