Fighting in a new division is ample motivation for both Gilberto Ramirez and Joe Smith Jr., two former champions who face off at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on October 7. The 12-round cruiserweight bout, plus undercard action, will air on DAZN.
Ramirez turned pro at middleweight and now moves into his fourth division. “Zurdo” is a former WBO super middleweight champ and attempted to win gold at light heavyweight. Stopped in his tracks by WBA champion Dmitry Bivol, Ramirez decided to move north to cruiserweight.
A bout against Gabriel Rosado was nixed after Ramirez missed weight, but he’s ready to make up for lost time.
“The cancellation of the Rosado fight was definitely a disappointing and challenging moment in my career,” Ramirez said via Boxing Scene. “It was the first time I missed weight and I take full responsibility for it. I understand that it had an impact on both the fight itself and my reputation. I’m determined to show through my actions and performances that I’m dedicated to my career and to rectify my past mistakes.
“I’m focusing on the present and future, and I’m looking forward to proving myself in upcoming fights and regaining the trust of those who support me.”

Smith, a former WBO light heavyweight champion, defeated and ultimately retired boxing legend Bernard Hopkins. Following his own loss to Bivol, he recovered well, winning four in a row. However, in his last bout, Artur Beterbiev decimated Smith in the second round of a unification bout, so the Long Islander is now looking to make a splash at cruiserweight.
