When does the Tour de France start? Stage 1 location, time, TV coverage to watch 2023 race
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With the calendar set to turn to July, the marquee event on the world cycling calendar is set to take center stage.

The Tour de France, the sport’s most prestigious race, will play out across 21 stages spread over 23 days, beginning in Spain before winding its way through the Pyrenees and the Alps and finally to the frenzied sprint finish on the Champs Elysees.

A total of 176 riders will start the race, but many of them won’t make it all the way through to the finish and only a select few will be in contention to take the yellow jersey home from Paris.

Jonas Vingegaard won his first Grand Tour here a year ago after finishing as runner-up to Tadej Pogacar in 2021. Those two are heavy favorites to challenge for the general classification victory again this year, though a dark horse could always sneak in.

Beyond them, the star attraction figures to be the legendary sprinter Mark Cavendish, who is back after missing last year’s Tour. The 38-year-old has 34 Tour de France stage wins, tied with the immortal Eddy Merckx for the most ever, and all eyes will be on him for the flat stages with sprint finishes.

So when does the action get underway? The Sporting News has the details:

When does the Tour de France start?

Tour de France start date: Saturday, July 1
Stage 1 start time: 6:30 a.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. local time
Approximate finish time: 11:15 a.m. ET / 5:15 p.m. local time

The 2023 Tour de France begins with Stage 1 on Saturday, July 1. The field will roll out of the center of Bilbao beginning at around 6:30 a.m. ET, and the leaders are expected to cross the finish line about four and a half hours later.

Where is Stage 1 of the Tour de France in 2023?

As has become the norm in recent years, it will take place outside the Tour’s namesake country. This year’s Grand Depart will be in Bilbao, Spain, with the opening stage starting and finishing in the Basque city and the 181.1km (113.1 mile) route traversing the nearby hills and the coastline along the Bay of Biscay.
