Two gifted fighters with history are set to clash for super lightweight gold. WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney will look to defend his title against Ryan Garcia on April 20. No venue has been announced as yet but the fight will reportedly be in Las Vegas. DAZN has been confirmed as the official broadcaster.
Haney has held gold since 2019 when he beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC lightweight belt. Eventually promoted to full-time status, he fought George Kambosos Jr. in Australia in June 2022, beating the Aussie to win the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring belts to become the undisputed champion. A rematch clause forced Haney to fight Kambosos again, where he once again outpointed him in his backyard. After that, Haney beat Vasiliy Lomachenko in a close contest to retain the belts.
The 25-year-old moved up in weight in December and beat Regis Prograis to win the WBC super lightweight title. His status as the undisputed champion was nixed as a result.
Garcia turned pro in 2016. He stopped Luke Campbell for the interim WBC lightweight title, but injuries and mental health issues halted his momentum. After beating Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna, Garcia faced Gervonta Davis in a catchweight money fight in an arena filled with celebrities. He got stopped in seven rounds.

After the Davis fight, Garcia got a new trainer in Derrick James, removing Joe Goossen from the picture. He beat Oscar Duarte back in December via knockout. Garcia teased a fight with Haney following their December bouts. He also attempted to face Rolando Romero. Negotiations with the latter went south, with continued friction between him and Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya adding to the drama. Now, Garcia is poised to fight for a major world title for the first time.
Both are familiar with one another. The two fought at the amateur level six times, with the series tied 3-3. Now, they compete at the pro level as they look to secure the ultimate bragging rights.
