Rugby’s greatest championship is upon us once more, and after a 2023 Rugby World Cup which saw another title go to the Southern Hemisphere despite more anticipation — and expectation — than ever in the north, Europe’s best rugby nations have licked their wounds and are all set to go toe-to-toe in the 2024 Six Nations tournament.
Andy Farrell’s Ireland side swept aside all who came before them in the 2023 Six Nations, collecting the title, Grand Slam, and triple crown titles to establish themselves amongst the firm favourites going into the World Cup, alongside hosts France. However, the draw of the tournament pitted the pair against New Zealand and South Africa respectively in the quarterfinals, with both losing by the narrowest of margins to the eventual finalists.
England and Wales both recovered from poor Six Nations showings to defy expectations at the World Cup, while the early-year momentum behind Scotland and Italy wasn’t enough for either side to make much of a dent in the tournament. However, with all six sides going into 2024 with new-look squads and points to prove, get ready for another fantastic edition of the original jewel in rugby union’s international crown.

Who will win the 2024 Six Nations tournament?
There’s little doubt that 2023 Grand Slam winners Ireland come into this year’s championship as firm favourites even without their charismatic playmaking captain Johnny Sexton. The 38-year-old retired from rugby following his side’s heartbreaking 28-24 defeat to New Zealand in their World Cup quarterfinal, but given that coach Andy Farrell has recently been appointed to lead the British and Irish Lions in 2025, and the production line of supreme talent at the Emerald Isle’s disposal in recent years, Ireland will still be the team to beat this time around.
France’s exit from their home World Cup last October was an even tighter affair, losing 29-28 to eventual winners South Africa despite taking the lead over the Springboks on three separate occasions. A potential hangover from that disappointment, coupled with the absence of captain Antoine Dupont for this tournament, could suggest something of a drop-off from Les Bleus, but they, like Ireland, will be firmly in the running to lift a seventh Six Nations title.
Steve Borthwick’s England side failed to fire in the 2023 Six Nations and suffered a humilitating home defeat to France along the way, but took huge strides during the World Cup and were just minutes away from beating South Africa to secure a place in the final. They, like Wales, will be hoping to build on the momentum from better-than-expected showings at the World Cup, and will be forces to be reckoned with come kick-off in February.
Scotland and Italy also took big strides leading into the 2023 World Cup, but having both been placed in pools containing two of the world’s top-four sides, were always up against it to make the knockout stages. Scotland pushed South Africa close but had run out of steam by the time of their deciding qualifier against Ireland, while Italy fell away massively from a strong start and suffered two 50+ point defeats to New Zealand and France respectively.

What is the 2024 Six Nations scoring system?
Four points are awarded for each win, two for a draw, and zero for a loss — but there are some bonus points up for grabs.
If a team scores four tries or more in a game, they will be awarded a bonus point. Additionally, losing teams are awarded a bonus point if their margin of defeat is seven points or fewer.
This means a winning team could take home either four or five points, while a losing team could earn zero, one or two.
Who has won the most Six Nations Championships?
Including the Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations Championships, England have won the most titles outright.
They have won the tournament 29 times (with a further 10 shared titles), just ahead of Wales’ 28 wins, with 11 more titles shared — leaving the pair level on a total of 39 championships won both outright and shared.
Since the the Six Nations era began in 200, England are the most successful side with seven wins – the last of which came in 2020. Ireland’s Grand Slam victory in 2023 was their sixth title in the modern Championship, tied level with France and Wales. Scotland and Italy are yet to win a title since the competition’s modern format was introduced at the turn of the century.
