Who plays on ‘Monday Night Football’ tonight? Time, TV channel, schedule for NFL Week 9 game

Week 9 is set to wrap up with an AFC battle on “Monday Night Football.”

MetLife Stadium is back in prime time, this time hosting a matchup between the Chargers and Jets as the season hits its halfway point.

When this game was put on the schedule, it was supposed to be a showdown between Aaron Rodgers and Justin Herbert. Rodgers, of course, won’t be available, with a 2023 return from a torn Achilles still uncertain.

Despite his absence, the Jets enter Monday’s game ahead of the Chargers in the AFC standings. Los Angeles has dealt with late-game failures on the offensive side of the ball, but a strong showing against the Bears last week and improved defensive play have the Chargers believing a return to the playoffs is very much on the table.

Even with half of the season still remaining, the winner of Monday night’s matchup will come away better positioned to go and take a wild card spot when the stretch run begins.

Here’s what to know about the “Monday Night Football” matchup in Week 9 and what this game means for both the Chargers and Jets.

Who plays on Monday Night Football tonight?

Matchup: Chargers vs. JetsLocation: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.

The Jets host the Chargers on “Monday Night Football” in Week 9, with both teams coming off wins.

The Chargers (3-4) got off to a concerning start to the season, losing their first two games and dropping two more after they climbed back to .500. Embattled head coach Brandon Staley took some of the pressure off himself when Los Angeles dominated the Bears in Week 8, staying very much within striking distance of a wild card berth in the AFC.

Most importantly, Justin Herbert played one of his best games of the season against Chicago, carving up the Bears’ defense in the first half and doing enough the rest of the way to maintain the lead. Herbert has struggled in a few critical late-game situations this season, so it will be worth watching what he does if the Chargers are caught in a close game against one of the NFL’s best defenses.

The Jets (4-3) have made a habit of playing close games, win or lose. Lately, the result has more often been a win. New York has narrowly won three consecutive games behind that excellent defense. With Zach Wilson at quarterback, winning ugly seems to be the Jets’ best recipe for success. Having a depleted offensive line doesn’t help, limiting the running game as well.

However, Wilson has arguably done the opposite of what Herbert has done this season. The former No. 2 pick has looked lost at times early in games, but in late-game situations, Wilson has largely delivered. Can he do it one more time and send the Jets two games over .500?
