Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil not interested in interest from elsewhere

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil says that he has little interest in entertaining speculation of gaining admirers from other clubs.

Head coach Gary O’Neil has reiterated his enjoyment of life at Wolverhampton Wanderers despite alleged interest from elsewhere.

On the back of being sacked as Bournemouth manager in the summer, Wolves’ decision to appoint O’Neil as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui initially divided opinion.

That remained the case for the first seven weeks of his tenure before he masterminded a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the end of September, winning over the club’s supporters in the process.

O’Neil has since moved Wolves into contention for European qualification, the West Midlands outfit sitting in ninth position in the Premier League standings and just one point adrift of seventh-placed Brighton, who they face in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night.

However, Wolves’ unforeseen progression under O’Neil has led to his reputation being enhanced and gaining admirers from other clubs in the Premier League.

Whether any interest is followed up remains to be seen, yet keeping Wolves in the top 10 of the Premier League for the remainder of the season will automatically ensure that the 40-year-old is viewed as one of the managers of the season.

Nevertheless, speaking to reporters at a press conference on Tuesday, the Englishman has played down suggestions that he could have his head turned with an offer from another club.

He said: “I haven’t heard or I’m not too interested in what other clubs think. I like that I have a good connection with the fans here. I’m loving the time that I’ve spent here so far and the matchdays that we’ve had to enjoy together.

“Of course, I’m pleased that things have gone well because that’s always the aim, but I’m always guarded against things starting to not going as well as we want them to.

“It’s going to be a tough end to the season. A few lads a creaking a little bit, there are a few tired bodies. It’s a small squad and it’s getting to a point where it’s becoming tough for some of them.

“The next 12 or 13 games will be and we need to keep pushing to see what we can achieve.”

O’Neil’s managerial career has spanned just 68 matches, initially losing 20 of his 37 games at Bournemouth and boasting a win percentage of just 29.73%, even though he successfully kept the Cherries in the Premier League against the odds.

At Wolves, O’Neil has recorded 14 victories from his 31 games in all competitions, losing 11, and he holds a contract at the club until the end of 2025-26.
