Chelsea miserable 2023 continued with a 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Christmas Eve at Molineux.

The Blues dominated the opening exchanges and missed a huge chance at 0-0 when Raheem Sterling wasted a three on one chance.

Wolves got the lead early in the second half through Mario Lemina’s header before Matt Doherty added a late second.

There was a brief scare for the home faithful when Christopher Nkunku scored on his Premier League debut, but the hosts held on.

Mario Lemina was a force of nature for Wolves in midfield.

Pochettino baffled by defeat

Mauricio Pochettino is struggling to understand how his team lost 2-1 to Wolves this afternoon.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We feel very disappointed because we deserved much more.

“In the first half, we deserved to score, but we were not clinical, that is why it’s so disappointing.

“Second half, we concede after a few corners, and that’s why it was really difficult.”

Mario Lemina sent a very heartfelt message to his dad, who is currently in hospital.

Speaking to Sky Sports he said: “He’s been in the hospital for two months. He’s struggling.

“I wanted to be around him, but I need to do my work.

“But dad, keep pushing and we are altogether.”

Lemina and Doherty reflect on win

Wolves duo Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty were delighted with Wolves’ 2-1 win over Chelsea.

They have been speaking to Sky Sports about the result.

Lemina said: “The support we’ve got here is fantastic. We push all of the time.

“We are struggling away, but we are really happy to deliver this performance in front of our supporters.

“Amazing.”

And Doherty said: “I’ve managed to nick a goal at the end, which was very important.

“I tend to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

“Ever since we’ve come back to the Premier League our record against top-six teams is quite good.

“The atmosphere is great and we feel comfortable on our own pitch.”
