Cameroon reached the knock-out stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in the most dramatic fashion courtesy of Christopher Wooh’s injury-time strike in a 3-2 victory over Gambia.
Having picked up just one point from their opening two matches, Rigobert Song’s side needed to win to have any hope of reaching the last 16.
Things were going swimmingly when they took a 1-0 lead courtesy of Karl Toko Ekambi’s strike just before the hour mark.
However, goals from Ablie Jallow and Ebrima Colley at other end meant the Scorpions, the lowest ranked team at the tournament, were not only set for a shock victory, but also progression to the knock-out stages as one of the best third-placed finishers.
Their hearts were broken though when James Gomez’ late own goal made it 2-2, before Wooh sparked scenes of delirium on the Cameroon bench when he rose highest to head home a corner in the 91st minute.
That, coupled with Senegal’s 2-0 win over Guinea, saw Cameroon, who dropped Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana for the clash, sneak second spot in Group C, keeping hopes of a sixth Africa Cup of Nations title alive.
“I am proud of my players,” said Song. “I would like to congratulate them for this performance. They showed patriotism and fighting spirit.”
His side will now face Nigeria on Saturday January 27 for a place in the quarter-finals.
Angola confirm top spot in Group D
Elsewhere, Angola qualified for the AFCON knock-out stages for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010. progressing as Group D winners.
Pedro Goncalves’ side had a straight shoot-out with Burkina Faso for top spot, with both teams heading into the clash on four points.
And after Jó Paciência’s first-half strike gave them a 1-0 lead, Zini’s injury-time strike secured the three points, as Angola backed up last week’s 3-2 win over Mauritania.
They will now play one of the competitions’ best third-placed teams in the last 16.
