Former Chair and President of British Triathlon and World Triathlon’s Vice President, Ian Howard, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List, recognising his immeasurable contribution to the growth of the sport domestically and internationally.
Mr. Howard was appointed Chair and President of British Triathlon from 2013-2019, with sustained growth in participation and profile of triathlon during his tenure. Ian’s impact stretches beyond Great Britain however, as he has also held positions such as Vice President of Europe Triathlon (2023-16), World Triathlon Board Member (2016-present), and currently serves as President of the Association of Commonwealth Triathlon National Federations and Vice President of World Triathlon.
In these roles he champions the sport around the world, with the breadth of field at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham a testament to his passion for growing triathlon and paratriathlon internationally.
Reflecting on his award, Ian Howard MBE, commented: “I am honoured and humbled by this award for services to the sport of triathlon. I was lucky enough to take part in the first British National Championships in Reading exactly forty years ago. Since that time the sport has grown and grown to become one of the most exciting and most watched Olympic and Paralympic sports in the world.
This award is not so much a celebration of my personal journey as a testament to the community of athletes, coaches and officials most of whom are volunteers, who have made this journey with me. This is for the world community of triathlon. Together we have really achieved greatness and I continue to be excited about what lies ahead”.
“We are honoured to have Ian in our Board. His commitment and dedication for our sport has always been precious. I want to send him our most sincere congratulations, on my name, on behalf of the Executive Board and the whole triathlon community”, said World Triathlon President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado.
