WVU Set to Hire Nelson Hernandez as Men’s Basketball GM

Darian DeVries adds a critical piece to his staff.

The West Virginia men’s basketball program is taking a page out of Neal Brown’s playbook by adding a General Manager to the staff.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, West Virginia is set to hire Nelson Hernandez as the program’s first-ever GM.

Hernandez spent the 2023-24 season as the director of player development at Oklahoma State, a role he also had at Wright State for the 2015-16 season. He’s served in several roles since graduating from Utah State in 2013.

Hernandez got his start as the video coordinator at Utah State (2010-14) and Clemson (2014-15) before moving into his aforementioned role at Wright State. From there, he became the director of basketball operations at VCU (2016-17) and then LSU (2017-22).

The hiring of Drew Fabianich has done wonders for the football program, truly advancing their scouting process while also allowing head coach Neal Brown to focus more on coaching. The hiring of Hernandez should provide the same help for first-year head coach Darian DeVries.
