According to the latest information from an extremely reliable source, Apple will announce a number of new Macs based on the Apple M3 in the coming days, including a new iMac as well as three new MacBook Pros.

As the oft very well-informed Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman states in the latest edition of his weekly “Power On” newsletter, Apple is currently preparing to announce four new Macs, the launch of which is expected to take place on October 30th or 31st. It remains unknown whether Apple is planning a large, live-streamed launch event or simply a series of press releases.

At least it is clear which products customers can expect. According to Gurman, the 24-inch iMac (US$1099 on Amazon) is finally getting a successor after the current, M1-based model came onto the market in April 2021. Just like the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the iMac will get an upgrade to the brand new Apple M3 ARM chip, but little will change in terms of design and other features.

At the same time, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will be upgraded to the Apple M3 Pro and M3 Max. The top model will be equipped with twelve performance and four efficiency cores as well as a graphics chip with up to 40 processing units and thus have four more performance and two more GPU cores than the predecessor model.

The MacBook Pro is not expected to change much apart from the new processors, but minor improvements in the mini-LED display are conceivable. A new design is not expected until 2026, when the devices switch to an OLED display. Gurman asserts that Apple is currently developing a 32-inch iMac Pro, which is expected to hit the market in late 2024 or early 2025.

Growing up in regional Australia, I first became acquainted with computers in my early teens after a broken leg from a football (soccer) match temporarily condemned me to a predominately indoor lifestyle. Soon afterwards I was building my own systems. Now I live in Germany, having moved here in 2014, where I study philosophy and anthropology. I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
