When Witcher Geralt of Riva appears, the interest among fans of the Witcher franchise is enormous. Funding for the new board and card game “The Witcher: Path of Destiny,” developed by Go On Board and CD Projekt Red, is running as a crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound and has already raised over US$2 million. The Witcher game reached its original goal of $75,000 after 4 minutes and 37 seconds and has since surpassed this amount by a huge margin.
The crowdfunding campaign for “Path of Destiny,” which started on 19 October, currently has more than 24,600 backers and will run for another 14 days. Until then, backers still have the opportunity to secure the game as a standard pledge and deluxe version at prices of US$55 and US$85, respectively, as well as unlock exclusive extras.
“Path of Destiny” is available in German, English, French, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Czech. In the first wave, backers will initially receive the English version. 3 months after the first batch, the game will then be delivered in other languages. In addition to the goodies already unlocked for “The Witcher: Path of Destiny,” backers of the deluxe edition will receive three miniature figures (Renfri, Stregobor and Renfri/Stregobor) when the next funding goal of US$2.25 million is reached.
In “Path of Destiny,” players take on the roles of iconic characters from the Witcher world, including Geralt of Riva, Ciri, Yennefer, Vesemir and Dandelion. You can relive key events from the games and books, making various decisions that affect the course of the game. The Witcher game offers deep mechanics that combine tableau building and strategic thinking. It is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced board and card players.
“The Witcher: Path of Destiny” is set to be released in 2024 and build on the success of “The Witcher: Old World” (available via Amazon), which too was a collaboration between Go On Board and CD Projekt Red. This was also funded in record time, raising US$8.5 million, making it one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns for a board game ever. After the campaign, the game was published in 17 languages and sold over 150,000 copies.

Growing up in regional Australia, I first became acquainted with computers in my early teens after a broken leg from a football (soccer) match temporarily condemned me to a predominately indoor lifestyle. Soon afterwards I was building my own systems. Now I live in Germany, having moved here in 2014, where I study philosophy and anthropology. I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
