Meta launched Threads earlier this month and its usage shot up. However, after the initial boost in new user signups and Daily Active Users, the platform’s usage metrics appears to have dropped significantly.

Within a record amount of time, Threads became the fast-growing social media platform, surpassing even ChatGPT. While the platform continues to welcome new users and Meta hasn’t started showing ads, users’ enthusiasm seems to have waned significantly. Let’s look at a new report that Elon Musk may surely like.

Threads Usage Shot Astoundingly But Growth Is No Longer Sustained?

Threads social media platform intended to rival Twitter, has achieved remarkable success since its launch a few days ago. By successfully leveraging Meta’s Instagram user base, Threads has already secured approximately one-quarter of Twitter’s weekly active user count.

After it launched earlier this month, Threads experienced frenzied user activity. Within 24 hours, Threads amassed over 100 million posts. Within a week, the platform welcomed 100 million new members. Needless to say, these are staggering numbers.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn’t waste any time boasting about these impressive statistics. Needless to say, Threads has emerged as the fastest-growing and biggest threat to Twitter.

However, it appears Threads platform’s exponential growth may have been limited to its initial days. This could be because the majority of Threads users were either Instagram users or were eager to switch over from Twitter.

Threads’ initial dream run appears to be slowing down. Metrics such as daily, weekly, and monthly ‘active users’ to distinguish between those who actively interact with a platform and those who merely signed up but remain inactive have revealed that Threads could struggle in the long run.

Will Threads Outrun Twitter?

Threads has over 100 million new users. There was a lot of user activity in the initial days of the launch. However, usage statistics appear to be gradually plateauing.

It is important to note that Threads is restricted to a few regions, most notably the US. Threads app is not available in the EU because it is a privacy nightmare and currently remains non-compliant with the EU GDPR, which strives to protect user data and privacy.

Simply put, Threads is limited in its scope and misses out on a huge and lucrative market. Meanwhile, Twitter is available in most of the countries.

The Threads app does not have a Direct Messaging (DM) function and even lacks a desktop version, forcing users to use the platform’s app. Meta has assured that all the relevant features, including hashtags and keyword search functions will be gradually added to the platform in the near future.

Twitter, on the other hand, is a mature social media platform. Granted it has several rivals, but it has more than 200 million monetizable daily active users.

Meta’s Threads is slowing down.

Same as Threads, Google+ created a hype by getting 10 Mn users in a record time of 2 days when it was launched in 2011.

It is amply clear that the Threads social media platform has caused a noticeable dent in Twitter’s user base and usage metrics. On the other hand, Instagram has a comparatively stronger and more loyal user base. This should benefit the Threads platform.

Threads’ rapid growth is undeniable. However, quite a few early adopters have reportedly exhibited a decline in usage over the past week. Some reports indicate Threads’ users are spending 50 percent less time on the platform than in the first few days.

Threads is unmistakably Twitter’s biggest and most formidable challenger. But it is difficult to say if Meta’s contender will win against Elon Musk’s eccentric but mature platform.
