Inflation and other factors tend to force prices on all goods higher, and that seems to be holding true for high-end electronics. But just occasionally consumers reap the benefits of market forces and see prices drop before a product reaches the end of its shelf life. Such is the case for AMD’s most powerful current Radeon cards, as the company readjusts its already competitive prices following the launch of Nvidia’s updated RTX 4000-series Super GPUs.
AMD is dropping the Radeon RX 7800 XT to a promotional price of $749 for some retailers, according to TweakTown. The 7800 XT was already fairly easy to find for $800 in many places, $100 off its original retail price, so it’s effectively $150 off at the time of this writing. Some stores are taking specific models down even further — Newegg has an Asrock version of the 7900 XT for as little as $709.99. Not bad at all.
Some press outlets are reporting that the even beefier Radeon RX 7900 XTX is getting discounted, but that seems to be a market correction if anything. Many variants of the 24GB card were going for $1,100 for the last few weeks, and now seem to have returned to the original $999 retail price. At least a couple of variants from PowerColor and Sapphire are down to $979.99 at Newegg. That’s effectively a 2 percent price drop…but hey, twenty bucks is twenty bucks.
AMD is reportedly calling this a “special promotional pricing program” for the first quarter of 2024 only. But given the way older card prices tend to stick to lower thresholds as new models come out, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the RX 7900 XT stay around that new $749 price for a while longer. AMD’s newest “budget” card (or mid-range, depending on what your budget actually is), the RX 7600 XT, is scheduled to go on sale on January 24th for $330.
