Threadripper for the desktop is officially back today (October 19, 2023) with the launch of the new 7000X-series processors. They are rated for a selection of the main I/O support upgrades of their PRO counterparts, not to mention their improved TDP. AMD backs them to beat comparator Intel platforms in use-cases ranging from software development to industrial design on high-end PCs.
AMD has debuted its latest series of Ryzen Threadrippers alongside their Threadripper PRO counterparts today (October 19, 2023). The new desktop-bound processors have a lot in common with their siblings pitched at industrial-grade workstations, the latest Gen3 Infinity Fabric “with speeds of up to 32Gb/s” and the sTR5 socket included.
Then again, AMD has been more prudent with the PCIe 5.0 specs of these non-WX Threadrippers, with 48 lanes as opposed to 128. Similarly, the 7000Xs support 4 channels of RAM, or half that of their PRO counterparts.
Nevertheless, the OEM still puts the PC series’ new flagship up against the Xeon w9-3495X, asserting that the new 7980X is more powerful than the workstation-grade Intel processor, with gains of up to 52% in AutoCAD and 69% while using Solidworks.
Accordingly, the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X has the highest-end 64-core/128-thread configuration, with a boost/base clock of 5.1/3.2GHz. It has been joined at launch by the 5.3/4.0GHz 7970X with a 32/64 make-up, and the base 24/48 7960X with speeds of 5.3/4.2GHz.
The 2 non-flagship Threadripper 7000Xs have the series’ base 128MB L3 cache, or half that of the 7980X. Nevertheless, all 3 are eligible for overclocking, not to mention a TDP of 350W. They and their pricing information will be released alongside their PRO counterparts on November 21, 2023.
Alternatively, the probably more affordable 5955WX is available on Amazon

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
