Micro LEDs are similar to OLEDs in that they can offer near-infinite contrast ratios, but, unlike OLEDs, the screens are not hindered by auto brightness limiters, allowing for 2,000 nit peak brightness full-field. This technology is also modular, so it could scale to different sizes and ratios. However, the relatively big pixel pitch recommends it for 100-inch+ screens.
Asus revealed the 135-inch ProArt Cinema PQ07 display at Computex 2023 this June, but back then, tech specs were not readily available. Thanks to a recent report from HDTVTest’s Vincent Teoh who attended the IBC event in Amsterdam, we now have more spec details for the large Micro LED display.
Surprisingly enough, the Asus model does not seem to use modular Micro LED panels from Samsung Display, as the 0.78 mm pixel pitch is slightly lower than what Samsung showed early this year. Of course, it retains the modular design, which allows for different sizes and ratios. Asus opted to offer a 4K resolution for the 135-inch size, and, thanks to the self-emissive nature of the Micro LED technology, this model can deliver near-infinite contrast ratios similar to OLEDs, yet can maintain 2,000 nit full-field brightness without being hindered by ABL. Color gamut is rated for 95% DCI-P3, slightly lower than what OLEDs can reproduce.
From the video footage presented by Vincent, it looks like the display does not have a particularly high refresh rate, so it might be limited to 60 Hz. Asus advertises the ProArt Cinema PQ07 as an ideal tool for colorists, virtual production, live streaming, home cinema and even vehicle driving simulations. Unfortunately, Micro LEDs are still far away from entering the mainstream consumer market, since the 135-inch model from Asus is priced at US$200,000.
