Amazon Web Services is doing something rather odd – promoting itself as a migration target for users of its own VMware Cloud on AWS service.
The promo appeared in recent days with the title “Save when you migrate VMware Cloud on AWS workloads to AWS.” Those who take up the offer are even eligible for $400 in cloudy credit for each VM they migrate.
Why would users of VMware Cloud on AWS want to migrate, given it was Amazon and VMware’s flagship hybrid cloud service?
Perhaps because The Register understands the service is unlikely to continue in its present form. Earlier this week we reported rumors of changes to the service and noted a recent Broadcom announcement that the company is “moving VMware workloads to Google Cloud – including customer-facing products and services as well as internal services.”
A reader with knowledge of recent discussions at VMware contacted The Register after that article. Requesting anonymity due to commercial sensitivities, they claimed: “You can still buy it [VMC on AWS] for now. But only from VMware. Resell by AWS is now over.”
Another source with knowledge of the situation confirmed these details.

AWS also detailed how to use its Application Migration Service Replication Agent to move VMware workloads into its Elastic Compute Cloud in an April 29 blog post.
A migration procedure mentioned in the post is billed as “valid for both VMware Cloud on AWS and VMware on-premises.”
VMware by Broadcom has previously told us it has nothing to say on the matter, and our inquiry to AWS remains open.
Under Broadcom’s ownership, VMware now only sells four bundles of products and emphasizes Cloud Foundation. When deployed in multiple locations, that suite will allow creation of a single logical software-defined datacenter.
VMware by Broadcom has promised license portability across on-prem and cloud environments to make adoption of Cloud Foundation in multiple locations easier, but to date only Google Cloud has adopted that offer. ®
