It seems that AYANEO is preparing to release two versions of the FLIP, a 7-inch gaming handheld that it recently revised. Now, the standard version has been re-branded as the FLIP KB to enable the release of the FLIP DS, a version with a small secondary display.

Earlier this month, we reported that Tassei Denki had shown off a prototype Nintendo 3DS-look alike based around modern AMD Ryzen hardware. While it is unclear whether Tassei Denki will ever bring its gaming handheld to market, it appears that AYANEO is preparing an equivalent called the FLIP DS. Incidentally, AYANEO has been teasing the FLIP for months, which has now been dubbed the AYANEO FLIP KB on account of its physical keyboard.

As Liliputing notes, the AYANEO FLIP DS is said to feature the same 7-inch and 120 Hz IPS display as the FLIP KB. Likewise, the FLIP DS should be available with the Ryzen 7 7840U, AMD’s popular Zen 4-based APU that also contains a Radeon 780M iGPU. Based on the images published so far, the FLIP KB and FLIP DS share the same controller layout, which AYANEO recently repositioned based on fan feedback.

However, the AYANEO FLIP DS swaps the six-row keyboard for a small secondary display, hence its DS name. Theoretically, the secondary display could prove useful when emulating Nintendo’s litany of games that take advantage of two displays, such as its DS catalogue. Alternatively, it could be used as a comparatively large trackpad, although it remains to be seen how AYANEO will optimise the AYANEO FLIP DS for dual display usage, whenever it arrives.
