Chinese media outlets reported on Friday that Su Tan, the General Manager of Baidu‘s Intelligent Driving Group’s (IDG) Intelligent Auto Business Department, has stepped down from his role. As per these reports, Li Tao is set to assume responsibility for Baidu IDG’s Intelligent Cabin operations.
Baidu is a key player in the realm of autonomous driving technology. The company began its journey in this field back in 2013, a time when autonomous driving was still a nascent concept for many. In 2017, it unveiled the Apollo brand, marking a significant step in its commitment to autonomous driving technology. Alongside this, Baidu also established its Intelligent Driving Group, an entity dedicated to advancing its interests in this innovative sector.
Currently, the Intelligent Driving Group’s operations span across three major areas. First, it provides autonomous driving ride services, a rapidly growing market with vast potential. Second, it is involved in the development of intelligent car manufacturing, a sector that is transforming traditional automotive production. Finally, the group also oversees Baidu Maps, a critical component in the autonomous driving ecosystem.
Su Tan has been an instrumental figure in Baidu‘s journey in the autonomous driving sector. He joined the company in 2013, the same year that Baidu began its foray into this field. During his tenure, he has held several key positions, including the General Manager of Baidu‘s Connected Car Division and the General Manager of the Intelligent Driving Innovation Department.
In July 2023, Baidu‘s intelligent car business experienced a leadership change when Chu Ruisong resigned. Following his departure, the responsibilities were divided between Su Tan and Wang Liang. Su Tan was tasked with leading the Apollo Intelligent Automobile Department (AIAD), a role that saw him overseeing all Tier 1 businesses, with the exception of Jidu, now known as Jiyue.
As of the time of writing, Baidu has not officially confirmed Su Tan’s departure.
