BYD’s New Electric Vehicle Factory in Indonesia to Start Operation in 2026

Today, BYD Auto Indonesia announced a partnership agreement with PT Suryabuat Swadaya, the developer of the “Subang Smartpolitan” industrial park.

Suryacipta Swadaya stated that BYD has chosen the “Subang Smartpolitan” industrial park as the site for its electric vehicle factory, which covers an area of over 108 hectares, making BYD the largest tenant in the park. The statement pointed out that the establishment of BYD’s electric vehicle factory in “Subang Smartpolitan” marks a significant step in promoting sustainable transportation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Eagle Zhao, President of BYD Auto Indonesia and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific, stated that this partnership agreement is the first step in the strategic initiative to develop an electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. “After various evaluations, BYD believes that the Subang Smartpolitan industrial zone is a suitable location for the development of BYD’s electric vehicle industry in Indonesia.” He also said, “This industrial zone meets the standards in terms of area, distance, environment, and the infrastructure we need, so we are confident that the facilities to be built will promote the growth of the Indonesian automotive industry.”

It is reported that BYD plans to establish a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem in its Indonesian factory, including a research and development center and training facilities equipped with the latest energy-saving and environmental protection technologies.

Zhao stated that the next step is the land (property rights) transfer, and the related work will be carried out in August 2024. BYD plans to construct in stages and expects to start operations in January 2026.

In January this year, BYD launched three pure electric models in Indonesia – Dolphin, Seal, and ATTO3 (Yuan PLUS), thereby further expanding its Southeast Asian market. Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, also announced at the press conference that BYD will invest $1.3 billion (approximately 9.36 billion RMB according to current exchange rates) to build a car factory in Indonesia, with an expected production capacity of 150,000 vehicles.

Eagle Zhao revealed that the company is planning to start building these facilities later this year and will establish up to 50 sales outlets nationwide in Indonesia by the end of 2024.

BYD, Wuling Motors, and other Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers will set up factories in Indonesia. The Indonesian government is reportedly considering more tax incentives to attract electric vehicle manufacturers.
