A recently leaked controller model and trademark suggest that Pico, a VR subsidiary of ByteDance, may soon release a new standalone VR headset, the Pico 4S.
A user nicknamed @Lunayian posted a 3D model obtained from the Pico Connect PC client on social media, which is said to display the right controller for the Pico 4S. This controller is similar in appearance to the “Pico 5” controller leaked online in September last year and is significantly different from the Pico 4 controller because the positioning ring has been removed.
@Lunayian also pointed out that Pico submitted a trademark application for the Pico 4S at the end of last year. This naming method suggests that the Pico 4S may just be a hardware upgrade of the Pico 4 headset, which was released in Asia and Europe in October 2022.
However, a report from The Information suggests that Pico might abandon the consumer-oriented Pico 5 VR headset project in order to compete with Apple’s MR headset Vision Pro, which is priced at $3500.
At present, Pico’s plans to release the Pico 4S, Pico 5, or even the rumored Pico 5 Pro Max are unclear. Despite Pico’s previous large-scale layoffs, the company will still participate in the 2024 Game Developers Conference (GDC) held in San Francisco, USA, from March 18th to 22nd.
