Rumours have surfaced that Canon will launch the PowerShot V100 in an effort to take the fight to the likes of Sony and Fujifilm by early 2024. Like the Sony ZV-E10, the PowerShot V100 is rumoured to have an APS-C sensor and an interchangeable lens mount, and it will supposedly be equipped with the DIGIC X image processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, and IBIS, putting it in spitting distance of the Sony A6600 and Fujifilm X-S20.
Canon seems to be on a roll and working hard to fill out its portfolio of mirrorless cameras for the entry-level and compact camera segment. Most recently, it launched the PowerShot V10 as a feature-rich option for those looking to migrate from smartphone content creation to a dedicated camera. A recent early rumour, shared by The New Camera, suggests that Canon will launch a much more capable PowerShot camera later this year or early in 2024.
The alleged new release will be called the PowerShot V100 and will be an interchangeable-lens APS-C mirrorless camera to compete with Sony’s ZV-E10 camera in the compact segment. While it’s still early days for the V100, the rumour comes with some specifications and features that make it seem like the PowerShot V100 will be worth more than a passing glance, as long as Canon can get the pricing right.
The new camera will supposedly have a 24.2-MP APS-C CMOS sensor, and the PowerShot V100 will supposedly come with some capabilities featured in the premium full-frame Canon EOS cameras, like HDR PQ, Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus II, 4K 60p video — albeit with a crop — and in-body image stabilisation with OIS, EIS, and IBIS working together in video capture. A respectable 15 FPS burst shooting and directional capsule microphones are also rumoured, although there is no EVF, indicating that the camera is aimed squarely at the content creator segment.
In comparison with the ~US$700 Sony ZV-E10, the V100 seems to handily take the crown if the rumours are true, with higher burst speed, and an almost identical resolution. The Sony doesn’t feature IBIS at all, either, giving the Canon a big leg up, although the V100 will probably be a bit more expensive than the ZV-E10 as a result. It’s also unclear what lens mount Canon will put onto the new PowerShot V100, but, since the rest of the camera seems much like a repackaged EOS R50, it would make sense for Canon to use its standard RF mount.
It also wouldn’t be unsurprising to see Canon release the PowerShot V100 with a fixed zoom lens, given how popular Fujifilm’s X100V has been for the brand. This would also allow Canon to differentiate the V100 and its mainstay EOS line-up further.
It remains to be seen how much Canon will charge for the V100, if it comes to fruition at all, but it will need to compete with the likes of the Fujifilm X-S20 and Sony Alpha A6600. That’s potentially a taller order than competing with the Sony ZV-E10, since the X-S20 has solid autofocus, 6K video, and a wealth of quality of life features that the ZV-E10 lacks, while the A6600 also significantly outperforms the ZV-E10.
