On April 26th, a devastating incident happened on a highway in Shanxi, China, involving an AITO M7 SUV. The vehicle collided with a maintenance vehicle, leading to a fire that resulted in the death of all three passengers. The family complained on social media that they were only notified of the accident two hours after it occurred.
Concerns arose as to why the AITO M7’s safety systems, including the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and General Automatic Emergency Braking (GAEB), failed to activate and prevent the collision. Additionally, questions were raised about the vehicle’s battery catching fire despite purported safety measures. The family also expressed disappointment over the lack of timely assistance from AITO’s customer service, which reportedly inquired about “post-sales experience” instead of aiding in rescue efforts.
Footage from the scene revealed that the AITO M7’s concealed handle did not release during the fire, prompting bystanders to attempt breaking the car windows to assist those inside.
AITO M7 was introduced in July, 2023, as the first mid-to-large-sized SUV under the AITO brand. It is a collaborative effort between Huawei and Seres, featuring a spacious 6-seater layout, AITO zero-gravity seats, and an upgraded HarmonyOS smart cabin.
On Sunday, AITO customer service responded, stating that a dedicated team has been established to investigate the matter further and collaborate with the traffic management authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry.
