Mere months before the vehicle’s scheduled August release, Tesla’s Cybertruck has been spotted exiting an aircraft in New Zealand. Tesla has previously used the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground on the South Island of New Zealand for winter testing. Presumably, Tesla will be evaluating the Cybertruck’s all-wheel-drive and handling performance as well as getting an idea of how the range holds up in snowy conditions.

While the Tesla Cybertruck has been delayed ad infinitum, a late August release date has been established, so footage of the Cybertruck is bound to start getting more frequent. The latest sighting of Tesla’s behemoth electric pickup truck, posted to the Cybertruck Owners Club, see it being unloaded from an aircraft in New Zealand, likely arriving for testing at the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds, where Tesla has previously conducted winter tests.

Just a few weeks ago, we got a glimpse at the Cybertruck in a camouflage wrap, indicating that it is near production, although there may still be a few things to tweak when it comes to power delivery in adverse weather conditions. Since it is summer in Tesla’s home field during this final testing period, the auto maker has had to export the Cybertruck for cold-weather testing.

Previous reporting has established that the Cybertruck is a heavy vehicle — EVs are heavy to begin with, and the chunky stainless steel skin of the Cybertruck can’t help in that regard — so the power and brake distribution side of the vehicle’s software will likely need tuning for low-traction conditions. One previous sighting of the Cybertruck saw it quite firmly stuck in the mud on the side of a rural Texas road with a Jeep Wrangler and Ford F-150 on site to help extricate it. Hopefully this latest round of testing refined the quad-motor AWD system enough that situations like that are uncommon occurrences.

My interest in tech started in high school, rooting and flashing my Motorola Defy, but I really fell down the rabbit hole when I realised I could overclock the i7 930 in my Gigabyte pre-built PC. This tinkering addiction eventually lead me to study product design in university. I think tech should improve the lives of the people using it, no matter the field. I like to read and write about laptops, smartphones, software and trends in technology.
