In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on February 8, 2024, Disney confirmed the acquisition of a minority stake of USD 1.5 billion in Epic Games – the publisher behind Fortnite. This investment is part of a broader strategic collaboration between the two companies.

The goal of the collaboration between Disney and Epic Games is to create a completely new gaming and entertainment universe. Disney’s extensive portfolio of brands and franchises, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar, are to be integrated into the game world. Disney CEO Bob Iger described this venture as Disney’s most significant foray into the games industry to date and emphasized the potential for growth and expansion that the partnership with Epic Games brings.

It is still unclear exactly what players can expect

As part of the initial announcement, the partners did not outline exactly what we can expect from the collaboration. However, it can be assumed that there will be more Disney property in Fortnite in the future – for example in the form of skins and crossover events. In the release trailer, fans have already seen hints of Disney brands such as Avatar, Frozen and more.

First results “maybe in a few years”

It will be some time before the collaboration between Disney and Epic Games produces its first results. In an interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke of “maybe in a few years”.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart – in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I’m not sitting at my computer, I’m probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life – namely sitting for long periods – at the local swimming pool.
