Google’s upcoming Tensor G4 SoC has supposedly shown up on Geekbench. It packs an 8-core CPU and an Arm Mali G715 GPU. The chip is slated to power the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel Fold 2 later this year.

Previous leaks suggested Google would take a conservative approach with the Tensor G4. It would be a derivative of the Tensor G3 with the same GPU but newer CPU cores. The SoC is slated to power the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel Fold 2, due to launch later this year. An alleged Geekbench listing now sheds light on its specs.

The Tensor G4 makes its Geekbench debut alongside a device codenamed “Google Tokay”. It isn’t immediately clear as to which one of the three aforementioned devices it is powering. Given how easily Geekbench listings can be manipulated, it could even be a fake. However, a deep-dive into the Geekbench listing reveals it’s the real deal, complete with an Arm Mali G715 GPU, 1x Cortex X4/X5 core clocked at 3.1 GHz, 3x Cortex A7xx cores at 2.6 GHz, four Cortex A5xx cores at 1.95 GHz and 8 GB of RAM.

These specs are puzzling at first because they show the Tensor G4 to be an 8-core chip. Its predecessor, the Tensor G3, packed 9 CPU cores, and a reduction in core count isn’t usual in upgraded parts. Furthermore, it performs worse than the Tensor G3 (1,268/3,510), with Geekbench scores of 1,082/3,121 and 1,024/2,788 in Geekbench 5’s single and multi-core tests. One can chalk this down to the Tensor G4 in question being a pre-release sample.

Previously, it was revealed that the Tensor G4 would be manufactured on Samsung’s 4LPP+ node, the same one used by the Exynos 2400. So far, the Exynos SoC has managed to keep up with flagship offerings from Qualcomm and MediaTek, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Tensor G4 can do the same. Those looking for a higher performance bump will have to wait for the Tensor G5, which will supposedly be made from the ground up by Google on a yet-to-be-specified TSMC node.
