Honor wants to knock Samsung off its throne in 2024. Even before the global launch at the Mobile World Congress 2024, the former Huawei subsidiary demonstrates in the form of tests what is so special about the Honor Magic 6 Pro and how the Chinese want to get to the top of the camera flagships and beat the Galaxy S24 Ultra in particular.
The smartphone flagship carousel has just started turning again. Samsung traditionally kicked off globally with the announcement of its Galaxy S24 series (earlier outsiders like Nubia excluded). The Vivo X100 Pro is now also available in parts of Europe, and many other high-end smartphones such as the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra will be launched at the Mobile World Congress at the end of February. The Honor Magic6 Pro will also be on show for the first time in a global version in Barcelona, but Honor has already revealed some of the feature highlights in advance – in addition to details the China launch had already revealed.
Sportography: Capturing the moment with AI Motion Sensing 2.0
Two areas in which Honor 2024 wants to stand out from the crowd are battery technology and the camera. For the first time, the “Falcon Camera System” offers a comparatively huge 1/1.49 inch 180-megapixel sensor for telephoto shots, which, thanks to the F/2.6 aperture, is designed to deliver bright and sharp photos at 2.5x optical magnification as well as at 5x and 10x crop zoom – a maximum of 100x zoom is possible.
The Honor AI Motion Sensing Technology 2.0, which was probably named “Sportography” in reference to Samsung’s “Nightography” marketing, is also particularly emphasized. The video below demonstrates the AI-supported technology, which even convinces fencing world champion Cécilia Berder. Anyone who wants to capture the fast action at the Olympic Games in Paris can rely on the camera in the Magic6 Pro – according to Honor. After Samsung’s cameras – despite improvements this year – are traditionally not among the fastest, the challenger should have an easy game here.
2nd generation silicon-carbon battery should offer advantages in cold weather
Those who like to travel on snowy slopes or visit northern Europe will be delighted with the second advantage of the Honor Magic 6 Pro – the battery. The new and second generation of silicon-carbon batteries with 5,600 mAh capacity, in combination with Honor’s dedicated E1 coprocessor, should offer tangible advantages, especially in cold ambient temperatures. Two Youtubers have taken a closer look at these claims. In both cases, the Honor Magic6 Pro is cooled down to temperatures of around -20 degrees Celsius.
In the first test, YouTube videos are played in a loop in the freezer, and a total running time of a remarkable 13 hours is achieved. The second, short test with the Galaxy S24 Ultra (available here on Amazon) shows in a direct comparison that Samsung’s flagship with a traditional lithium-ion battery has no chance at such low temperatures. After 5 days in standby mode, only the Honor phone still shows signs of life. How well the silicon-carbon battery performs against the Galaxy S24 Ultra at more normal temperatures remains to be seen, of course.
