“Today, Huawei Pura 70 Ultra and Huawei Pura 70 Pro have launched the Pioneer Program and are officially on sale.” At 10:01 am on April 18th, after several days of speculation in the market and a lot of preheating information that raised expectations to the maximum, Huawei Terminal officially announced this news – as expected, there was no press conference, they went straight to sales.
Everything is very “Huawei”. Whether it’s the familiar “surprise sale” or the timing. In August 2023, without any preheating, Huawei officially announced the Pioneer Program and suddenly launched the new Mate60 series.

At that time, it was still half a month away from the rumored Huawei autumn new product launch event scheduled for mid-September. And on April 18th, 12 years ago, it was the day when Huawei’s first P series phone was launched.
According to Huawei Terminal’s introduction, at 10:08 on April 18th, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra and Huawei Pura 70 Pro were sold first. On April 22nd at 10:08, the Huawei Pura 70 Pro+ and Huawei Pura 70 followed suit and went on sale as pioneers. In terms of pricing, the Pura 70 starts at ¥5499, the Pura 70 Pro starts at ¥6499, the Pura 70 Pro+ starts at ¥7999, and the Pura Ultra starts at ¥9999.
There are reports that at the Huawei Mall, the Pura 70 Ultra and Pura 70 Pro were sold out within about one minute after going on sale at 10:08. As of the time of writing, the entire Pura 70 Ultra series is showing as “temporarily out of stock,” but some models of the Pura 70 Pro will go on sale again on April 18th at 16:08.
On April 15th, Huawei officially announced that the P series brand will be upgraded to Pura, starting afresh with a new look. The upgraded Pura 70 will also become the first product of the new series. On April 16th and 17th, some Huawei store employees have indicated that the new product is available for blind pre-orders, but the arrival time is uncertain.
Around 12 o’clock on April 18th, prototypes were successively displayed in several authorized Huawei experience stores in Beijing. A reporter found at one store that many consumers were already gathered around the staff to learn about the specific parameters of the products.
The staff told the reporter that more than 100 units had been pre-ordered at this store since they started accepting reservations, with Pura 70 Pro being the most popular model.
The registration form on-site has already reached number 123. Some consumers said, “Let’s place an order first and decide later, anyway it will be in high demand later.”
Official information shows that the Huawei Pura 70 series features an industry-first super-focus retractable camera, capable of achieving ultra-high-speed capture and setting a new record for speed. It also has super-focus macro telephoto capabilities, further enhancing portrait, night scene, telephoto, and video capabilities. Taking the Pura 70 Ultra as an example, equipped with a super-focus retractable camera, it can achieve a capture speed of 300km/h and is equipped with super-focus macro telephoto lens with an F2.1 large aperture and 35x super macro capability.
In addition, the Huawei Pura 70 series comes with the all-new HarmonyOS 4.2 system. The Beidou satellite messaging system has been upgraded to support sending picture messages. The entire series supports AI remote control operation, intelligent payment sensing technology, integrates Pangguo’s large model for AI elimination and cloud enhancement applications among other smart features.
TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo once predicted that compared to the P60 series released in 2023, the shipment volume of the P70 series will see a significant increase in 2024. If there is strong demand for replenishing mobile phone inventory, the shipment volume of P70 is expected to increase by 230% to 13-15 million units; if demand slows down, it is also expected to achieve an increase of 150% to 10-12 million units.
Huawei’s annual report for 2023 shows that the overall business performance of Huawei in 2023 met expectations, achieving a global sales revenue of 704.2 billion yuan and a net profit of 87 billion yuan. Among them, the terminal business achieved sales revenue of 251.5 billion yuan, an increase of 17.3% year-on-year.
In February this year, market research firm Counterpoint Research released a report stating that Huawei made a strong comeback to the Chinese market by ranking first in smartphone sales in the first two weeks of 2024.
The report mentioned that Huawei has regained the top spot in the Chinese smartphone market, with its Mate 60 series featuring the self-developed Kirin 9000S chip being a key driving factor for Huawei’s recent success. In addition, its strong brand loyalty and successful launch of HarmonyOS operating system have also contributed to its momentum.
According to data released by the market research firm Canalys, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Huawei shipped 10.4 million smartphones in the domestic market, a year-on-year increase of 47%, ranking fourth with a market share of 14%. Data from Counterpoint shows that in the first six weeks of 2024, Huawei ranked second in the domestic market with a share of 17%, an increase in sales volume by 64% compared to last year; during the same period, Apple’s sales plummeted by 24%, ranking fourth with a share of 16%.
