Instagram’s Threads to Receive Support for Twitter-esque Hashtags, Edit Functionality, and Much More

Instagram’s specialized text-sharing application called Threads is preparing to introduce numerous fresh features. These additions include Twitter-style hashtags, an edit button, a trending page, and potentially an automatic archiving function. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, confirmed these upcoming features through a series of posts on Threads.

Instagram, known for its visual-centric platform, has taken a step towards promoting text-based communication with the introduction of Threads. This specialized app, developed by the Instagram team, provides a platform for sharing text updates and participating in public conversations.

The Power of Threads

Threads allows users to log in using their Instagram accounts, enabling seamless integration with their existing social network. With Threads, users can create updates limited to 500 characters, and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes long. It offers a new way to connect with friends and share personal moments in a more intimate and focused environment.

Hashtags: Improving Discoverability and Engagement

One notable addition to Threads is the incorporation of hashtags. Similar to Twitter, the hashtags used in Threads will become clickable, allowing users to easily explore topics of interest and join popular discussions.

In his announcements, Mosseri also disclosed plans to make Threads compatible
with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
