Sources familiar with the supply chain have confirmed that Apple plans to transition most of the iPad lineup to OLED. Talks are ongoing to secure supply for panels that will eventually be found on the iPad Air and iPad Mini in 2025.
Rumours about OLED-powered iPads and MacBooks have been going around for ages. So far, the only real-world change has been the inclusion of mini-LED panels in top-spec iPad Pro models. Multiple sources have reported they’ll be the first to get the OLED treatment. Now, a report from the South Korean forum Naver states that the iPad Air and iPad Mini will follow suit.
A source in the labyrinthine Apple supply chain states that Cupertino is negotiating with Samsung, LG and “Chinese companies” (likely BOE) for OLED panels. Products from the first two will probably end up in high-end models, while the third will be reserved for subsequent iPad Air and iPad Mini variants.
Mass production of the said iPad Air and iPad Mini models is expected to kick off in 2025, meaning we could see them on store shelves sometime in 2026. That leaves the base iPad as the sole recipient of an LCD screen. Whether or not it receives the eventual OLED treatment remains to be seen.
