iPhone 16 and 16 Plus tipped to fail at upgrading refresh rate to even 90Hz in 2024

Apple touts the vanilla iPhone 15 and 15 Plus as having Super Retina XDR screens – however, the supposed flagship devices are saddled with a display refresh rate that is virtually extinct amongst even the cheapest new Android smartphones in 2023. Nevertheless, according to a new leak, there is no point in upgrading to their 16-series successors in order to get away from that spec next year.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus launched with screens of the same size as the 15 Pro and Pro Max respectively, and also upgraded to the same Dynamic Island technology for the first time. Nevertheless, Apple chose to hold the 2 vanilla flagships back in other ways in 2023.

The Cupertino behemoth bestowed 120Hz refresh rates on its latest Pro-series smartphones, yet forgot about the 15 series in the same respect, leaving both devices on 60Hz. Meanwhile, new Android devices with AMOLED displays capable of running faster at 90Hz are bouncing around on Amazon for under US$200 today (November 19, 2023).

Now, according to a new Naver post, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are not likely to get any more competitive in this respect. It asserts that they will launch with 6.12-inch and 6.69-inch displays respectively (effectively last-gen dimensions, then) with “improvements to some device parts“.

Some, but not all, however, with those that would confer a refresh rate of more than 60Hz apparently among those to be left out yet again in 2024. Accordingly, Apple fans looking for more affordable upgrade options may be put off by 16-series options that look the exact same as their predecessors, from the front at least.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
