Larger laptops are getting more popular and Lenovo expands its affordable ThinkPad E-series with a 16-inch model for the home office. The new ThinkPad E16 G1 is available with Intel as well as AMD processors. The hardware options are pretty much identical to the smaller ThinkPad E14 G5, and Lenovo also uses some of the same components like the motherboard, for example.

Our review unit is a campus model equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U, 24 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD as well as the 400-nit WQHD-IPS screen for 938 Euros (without operating system). The WQHD panel is not available in all regions yet, but can be selected in Lenovo’s own online shop as an upgrade for around 100 Euros.

The chassis is susceptible to fingerprints.

Unsurprisingly, the new ThinkPad E16 G1 is a larger version of the familiar ThinkPad E14 G5. The black office laptop is immediately recognizable as a ThinkPad and the E16 fells comfortable in professional environments. Whether you call the design timeless or boring is obviously up to you. The surfaces (lid, base unit as well as bottom cover) are very susceptible to fingerprints, so you will have to clean them on a regular basis. Similar to other current ThinkPad models there is a camera bump, which does not look good, but it makes it easier to open the lid.

The E16 G1 leaves a decent quality impression and Lenovo uses aluminum both for the lid as well as the base unit. The bottom cover on the other hand is made of cheap and rough plastic, where fingerprints are even more visible. We are not completely convinced by the stability of the base unit since we can easily dent the center and we can also slightly twist it, but there are no creaking sounds. The lid allows minor twisting as well, but the overall impression is better and we cannot provoke image distortions. The central hinge keeps the lid well in position and there is only minor bouncing, but it is tricky to open the lid with one hand. The maximum opening angle is 180 degrees.

The E16 G1 is one of the largest models within our comparison group consisting of 15.6 as well as 16-inch laptops, but the differences are not huge. It is also the heaviest models at slightly more than 1.8 kg; the compact 65-Watt power adapter tips the scale at 300 grams.

Lenovo covers all the bases with HDMI, USB-C as well as USB-A and you do not need any adapters, but the standards are only the bare minimum. Only one of the two USB-C ports supports the 3.2 Gen.2 standard and there is no sign of USB 4.0. The HDMI output is also limited to the old 1.4b standard, so you should connect external high-resolution screens via USB-C if possible. There is no card reader, despite the larger chassis.

Left side: USB-C 3.2 Gen.1 (5 Gbps, DisplayPort 1.4, Power Delivery 3.0), USB-C 3.2 Gen.2 (10 Gbps, DisplayPort 1.4, Power Delivery 3.0), USB-A 3.2 Gen.1 (5 Gbps, Powered), HDMI 1.4b, 3.5 mm stereo
Right side: USB-A 3.2 Gen.1 (5 Gbps), Gigabit-Ethernet, Kensington Nano Security Slot
Replaceable Wi-Fi module

In addition to the Gigabit Ethernet port, you also get a modern Wi-Fi module (MediaTek RZ616). It supports the latest Wi-Fi 6E standard for 6 GHz networks as well as Bluetooth 5.2. We were not able to use the corresponding 6 GHz network of our reference router from Asus and had to use the 5 GHz network instead. The transfer rates were very high and steady, only the transfer rates while receiving files could be a bit higher. However, there are no limitations in practice.

The bottom cover is secured by multiple Philips screws as well as several plastic clips. The cover is still firmly attached once you loosen the screws (do not remove them completely) and you should carefully try to loosen the clips starting at the rear with a suitable tool. Once inside you will find the motherboard of the ThinkPad E14 G5, which means there is a large area without components due to the larger chassis. The maintenance options are good overall: You can replace the Wi-Fi module, there is a RAM slot and you can install to M.2-SSDs (1x M.2-2280 & 1x M.2.2242).

Lenovo uses the additional width of the chassis to integrate a dedicated numpad. The keys are a bit narrower than the majority of keys, but this does not limit the usability. The typing experience itself is similar to the smaller ThinkPad E14 G5 with the same key travel of 1.5 mm. Typing is comfortable and precise, but it is not a highlight like it used to be on older ThinkPad models and subjectively, we slightly prefer the current keyboards of HP’s EliteBooks. A two-stage white illumination helps in darker environments. The power button is located on the right side above the keyboard and also acts as fingerprint scanner.

You can either use the clickpad or the TrackPoint for cursor movements. Once you get used to the latter, it is comfortable to use and the three corresponding mouse buttons also work well, but the clicking sound is uneven and a bit too loud. The gliding capabilities of the clickpad could be a bit better and our fingers got stuck a bit from time to time. The mechanical click is not perfect, either, since the clicking mechanism on the left side is very heavy on our review unit.

Lenovo offers different display for the ThinkPad E16 G1, which are all based on the IPS technology. The default screens (16:10) offer a resolution 1920 x 1200 pixels as well as a brightness of 300 nits (45 % NTSC, with and without touch, 100 % sRGB optional). Our review unit is equipped with the high-resolution WQHD panel with 2560 x 1600 pixels as well as a higher brightness of 400 nits. The subjective picture impression is very good and bright surfaces do not look grainy, despite the matte surface. We did not detect PWM flickering and backlight bleeding is not a big issue.

We can confirm the advertised brightness with a maximum value of 410 nits (389 nits on average). The black value is low at 0.24 cd/m², which results in a very good maximum contrast ratio of almost 1700:1. The response times are inconspicuous and there is no ghosting.

* … smaller is better

Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software (X-Rite i1 Pro 2) reveals a minor blue cast out of the box, but the color deviations are already low. We were able to improve the picture quality even further with our own calibration (profile can be downloaded for free in the box above), but this is not really necessary considering this is an office laptop. The small sRGB gamut is almost covered completely.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession – a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 54 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19019 (minimum: 5 – maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

The matte panel is an advantage outdoors and the brightness is not reduced on battery power. Very bright environments (in direct sunlight, for example) are too challenging and you cannot see the display contents comfortably anymore, but otherwise, there are no issues. The viewing angle stability of the IPS screen is very good.

Viewing angle stability

Lenovo implemented its own power profiles into the default Windows settings a while ago. We used the setting Best performance, where the CPU can consume 30 Watts, for our benchmarks and measurements below. The other profiles are more efficient with a consumption of 20 Watts (Balanced) and 10 Watts (Best power efficiency), respectively.

AMD’s Ryzen 7 7730U is currently used in a number of affordable laptops and we already reviewed it a couple of times as well. Even though the model designation suggests a modern AMD processor, this is pretty much the old Ryzen 7 5825U. It still uses old Zen 3 cores with a maximum clock of 4.5 GHz.

The CPU performance is almost completely stable during our Cinebench R15 Multi loop and the multi-core performance is still very competitive despite the old Zen 3 cores. Intel’s modern CPUs only have an advantage in single-core tests thanks to their performance cores, but they also consume more power. All in all, the Ryzen 7 7730U offers sufficient performance for all common office tasks.

The CPU performance is completely stable on battery power. More CPU benchmarks are listed in our tech section.

The M.2-2280 SSD can be replaced.

The ThinkPad E16 G1 offers two PCIe-3.0-x4 slots for SSDs and the regular M.2-2280 slot is occupied by default, but you can easily expand the storage capacity with an additional M.2-2242 drive. Our review unit is equipped with the 1 TB version of the WD SN740, which offers good transfer rates. However, the performance starts to fluctuate under sustained workloads, but this does not affect your everyday office workloads. You can use around 914 GB for your own files after the initial set-up. More SSD benchmarks are listed here.

GPU-Z Radeon RX Vega 8

The Ryzen 7 7730U is equipped with the old Radeon RX Vega 8 iGPU, which is also used for the smaller ThinkPad E14 G5. Unsurprisingly, the results in the GPU benchmarks are identical and the performance is completely sufficient for standard office tasks. The Vega 8 can still keep up with the Iris Xe Graphics G7, which is still used for Intel’s latest Raptor Lake chips.

The overall gaming performance is very low and you are often limited to low/medium details when you want to play in 1080p, even for older titles. The graphics performance is stable during longer gaming sessions as well as on battery power. More GPU benchmarks are available here.

Single fan with two heat pipes

The cooling solution is identical to the smaller ThinkPad E14 G5, but the larger ThinkPad E16 G1 stays noticeably quieter. Even with the Best performance power profile, the fan rarely starts spinning during regular use and even if it is running, you can only hear a very quiet murmur. The large office laptop is also quieter under load at up to 36 dB(A). If you want an even quieter laptop, you should select the Best power efficiency profile, which results in 27 dB(A) during the stress test, which is hardly audible at all. Our review unit did not produce any other electronic noises like coil whine.

There are no problems with the surface temperatures in light workloads where the chassis hardly warms up at all. However, the quieter fan is noticeable under load and the surface temperatures are higher compared to the ThinkPad E14 G5, despite the larger chassis. We measure more than 50 °C at the center of the bottom, so you should not put the E16 on your lap in this scenario. The right side of the chassis stays cooler in general since there are no components located here.

The CPU power consumption quickly levels off at 25 Watts during our stress test with combined CPU/iGPU load.

The two stereo speakers offer a decent sound quality, especially for an affordable office laptop. The ThinkPad also has a noticeable advantage over rivals like the HP ProBook 450 G9 in this regard.

Our consumption measurements do not reveal any surprises, but the maximum idle consumption is a bit higher compared to some rivals due to the higher screen brightness. We measure up to 56 Watts under load, which levels off at around 48 Watts after a couple of minutes. The 65W power adapter is therefore completely sufficient.

57-Wh battery

The 16-inch panel seems to be more efficient at 150 nits compared to the 2.2K display of the smaller ThinkPad E14 G5 since the results are better despite the similar 57 Wh battery. Our video test runs for 11:44h and the Wi-Fi test for 11:17h, which are very good results. Only the Wi-Fi runtime result at full brightness is worse at slightly less than 7 hours. These results are better compared to the rivals. The battery can be drained in around 80 minutes under load since the CPU performance is not reduced on battery power.

The new ThinkPad E16 G1 is pretty much what you would expect from a larger ThinkPad E14: You get a larger display and a keyboard with a dedicated numpad. Otherwise, the differences are marginal and Lenovo uses some components from the smaller model like the mainboard as well as the battery, which saves the manufacturer some money. Considering this is an entry-level business laptop, we can understand this procedure.

Like the optional 2.2K screen on the smaller 14-inch model, we are really happy with the optional WQHD screen for an office notebook. The picture quality of the matte IPS screen is very good, there is no PWM flickering and the response times are inconspicuous. The panel is also very efficient at lower brightness levels, which results in long battery runtimes.

The performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U is identical to the smaller model and even though it is not the latest processor, the multi-core performance is still completely competitive. Contrary to most Intel laptops, the performance is also very stable and the GPU performance of the Vega 8 is also comparable to the current Intel CPUs.

The ThinkPad E16 G1 AMD offers good system performance, long battery runtime, a large WQHD panel as well as a good price-performance ratio.

There are obviously drawbacks like the dated port standards or the lack of a card reader. We also have to repeat our criticism about the development of Lenovo’s keyboards. The ThinkPad E16 G1 also uses a keyboard with 1.5 mm key travel, which is just not as good as the older versions with 1.8 mm travel. And considering the size of the ThinkPad E16 G1, we do not think a 0.3 mm thicker keyboard would have made a difference.

The Acer TravelMate P4 offers similar performance figures, but offers more modern ports as well as a card reader. HP’s ProBook 450 G9 on the other hand still uses smaller and darker 15.6-inch panels, and the performance is lower as well. The silver chassis on the other hand is less susceptible to fingerprints.

The new ThinkPad E16 G1 can be configured in Lenovo’s online shop starting at $473 right now. Our review unit retails for around $960 with Windows 11 Home.

I grew up with modern consumer electronics and my first computer was a Commodore C64, which encouraged my interest in building my own systems. I started working as a review editor for Notebookcheck during my dual studies at Siemens. Currently, I am mainly responsible for dealing with business laptops and mobile workstations. It’s a great experience to be able to review the latest devices and technologies and then compare them with each other.
