For years Mark Zuckerberg has poured billions of dollars into R&D, chasing the next big computing platform which he calls, the Metaverse. Until now, he’s taken a lot of heat with many of the products to date, failing to live up to the hype, but this week, things changed a lot.
In the third interview between Lex Fridman and Mark Zuckerberg, the pair hosted the discussion thousands of miles apart, but thanks to the latest VR products from Meta, felt as if they were across the table from each other.
This is so incredible, this is truly incredible
Lex Fridman
This new hardware and software has unlocked the ability for your avatar in the virtual world to actually represent you in a photorealistic way. If this is what the Metaverse is, I want in.
During the interview, Lex is clearly stunned at the technical capabilities of this unreleased platform which quickly turns to an appreciation of what’s possible with this. Connecting with loved ones from around the world in a new way is possible like never before, it is seriously compelling to watch.
The interview goes around an hour and is well worth it for insights into what the future could be.
Zuckerberg commented about the lengthy, multi-hour scanning process to achieve this photorealistic experience, but they are working on a rapid capture experience done with a smartphone in just a few minutes.
This week Meta announced the Meta Quest 3, a big upgrade on the previous generation (A$799.99), but what we see in this video, is another generation after. This means there’s no firm timeline or pricing of when we can get this in our homes and businesses, but the early reaction online suggests many would be queuing up for it.
