The changes and improvements to X continue to roll out and the latest confirmed feature is an important one for content creators.
X Designer Andrea Conway (@ehikian) released a preview of the upcoming feature that allows users to control the default upload quality when posting videos to X.
The options here include extremely low 240 and 480p video which I hope nobody uses, along with 720p (currently recommended) and 1080p. The mockup also includes control over the ability for others to easily download the content or not.
Naturally, many of us who create content in 4K are keen to post videos in the very best quality possible and asked for 4K support.
In just a matter of hours, we now have confirmation that 4K video support on X, is indeed on the the way. Elon Musk replied to Andrea’s post confirming that 4K video support would be coming to X in a month or two.
I regularly see, and have myself posted a 1080p version to X, then posted the 4K version to YouTube and link from X to the highest quality on YouTube.
With X heading towards an app for TVs as well, having 4K quality video is important to deliver a great experience to users. This does obviously come with additional bandwidth and storage costs and X is likely to do the magic of recompressing video in multiple resolutions like YouTube does, to serve the most appropriate quality for the connection quality on the end-user device.
As someone who uses X Pro daily, I also hope X adds a theatre mode as we currently have only three options video, inline, pop out to the lower-right corner of your screen, or full screen. When you run an ultra-wide screen and multiple windows, it’d be great to expand to the width of the browser window.
Will having 4K video quality encourage you to watch more video on X?
