With affordable smartphones, buyers have to accept some compromises in some places, but with the Motorola Moto G54, such compromises are quite rare. This already starts with the case.
Vegan leather in two color versions
In our test, the Motorola smartphone scores with good workmanship, and two of the color versions even feel really good in the hand: In the Indigo Blue and Mint Green versions, the back cover is made of vegan leather, providing the smartphone with a good grip and high-quality haptics. For the same price, you can also get the Glacier Blue and Midnight Blue color versions of the Moto G54, where the back cover is made of smooth plastic.
Other positive aspects of the 6.5-inch smartphone include an IPS display with a 2400 x 1080 pixel resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, as well as good storage equipment. This consists of 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage that can be further expanded by up to 1 TB using a microSD card.
Solid midrange performance with the MediaTek Dimensity 7020
The Moto G54 is run by the MediaTek Dimensity 7020, a new iteration of the Dimensity 930 midrange processor from 2022. This hardware ensures that Motorola’s budget smartphone runs fairly smoothly, with stutters or delays remaining the rare exception in our test. In addition to three years of security updates, buyers can also expect two OS upgrades. The Moto G54 comes with Android 13.
In addition to offering 5G with eSIM and a good battery life, the Moto G54 also surprised us in the test with a good camera that is above average for its price class. In good light conditions, the 50-MP lens is able to take pictures that are fairly sharp and rich in contrast, even if the colors can appear slightly pale at times. But even in bad light conditions, the camera is still able to capture a lot of details.

My fascination for computers started with the C64. Since then, I’ve put everything that comes my way in terms of hardware through its paces. From the C64 to the Amiga 500 and the first PC with an 8088 CPU, my list of projects has grown increasingly longer. For more than 20 years now I have also turned my hobby into my profession and have been active in the mobile section of Notebookcheck since 2021. Before that, I worked as a hardware editor for IDG Media (tecChannel.de) and VNU Business Publications (PC professional), among others.
