Netflix gears up to increase prices again, report claims
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Netflix is planning to increase the cost of its ad-free tiers, a new report claims.

The subscription rates are expected to go up a few months after the actors strike has been settled, according to sources who spoke to the Wall Street Journal. The higher rates will reportedly affect customers in the U.S. and Canada first before rolling out to other markets.

The video streaming giant currently offers two ad-free plans: Standard for $15.49 a month and Premium for $19.99 a month. It scrapped its ad-free Basic plan earlier this year.

From November 2022, Netflix also started offering an ad-supported plan for $6.99 a month. The fee for this tier, the most lucrative one for the company, could dodge the upcoming increases, though at the current time Netflix is declining to confirm any upcoming changes.

The last time Netflix hiked its subscription fees in the U.S. and other major markets was in early 2022 when Basic increased by $1 a month, Standard by $1.50, and Premium by $2.

It’s not clear how existing customers will respond to the price hike. While many may well roll with it, some could switch to the cheaper ad-supported tier. Others may be tempted to check out rival services or cancel several existing subscriptions to save money.

At least Netflix has the wisdom to hold off on price increases until the actors strike is settled, as hiking fees at a time when no fresh content is landing on the streaming service would undoubtedly be hard for some subscribers to swallow.

In related news, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that the monthly cost of the ad-free version of its Discovery+ streaming service will increase from $6.99 to $8.99, while the cost of its ad-supported plan will remain at $4.99 a month.

And next week will see increases in the fees for ad-free versions of Disney’s streaming platforms Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.

Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Each and every month, Netflix adds new original movies, as well as films that are borrowed from other studios to shore up its cinematic lineup. Essentially, movies are coming and going all of the time. While we can’t predict the quality of Netflix’s original flicks sight unseen, the established films allow us to make an educated pick for the single best movie to watch on Netflix in September. And this month, that film is The Wolf of Wall Street, a 2013 crime/comedy flick from director Martin Scorsese.

The Wolf of Wall Street is a timely choice because Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are reteaming for the seventh time next month with The Killers of the Flower Moon. Their collaboration dates back over two decades, and Scorsese and DiCaprio have proven to bring out the best in each other. But if you have any doubts that this is the best movie to watch in September, then we have three reasons why you should check it out and see for yourself.

A couple in bed while a camera records them in the film Paranormal Activity.

With August nearing its end, Netflix is about to do its monthly withdrawal of films and TV shows from its streaming library. This may be an unfortunate time for certain subscribers, as Netflix will be removing some popular and iconic movies on September 1st, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Bruce Almighty, Magic Mike, and all three Rush Hour films.

But with the summer winding down to its last days, audiences should use whatever vacation time they have left to view these three films before they leave Netflix.

“To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn, turn.” The Byrds’ ode to time passing by is always relevant, especially when streaming schedules shift with each month. All good things must come to an end, and that includes some of your favorite movies and TV shows on streaming services. Netflix is not immune to losing content, even if it more than makes up for it with originals like Heart of Stone or The Out-Laws.

In September 2023, Netflix will be losing some seasons of The Originals, the popular Vampire Diaries spinoff, and Hatfield & McCoys. In addition, the mega-popular romance Titanic, the first five Rocky movies, the comedy A League of Their Own, and the superb Harrison Ford action movie Clear and Present Danger will be leaving the popular streaming service next month. Find out if one of your favorites is leaving Netflix in September so you can watch it before it disappears.
