On October 24th, NIO announced that it has built a total of 600 battery swapping stations on highways, covering 482 highway service areas and 118 highway entrances and exits. They are distributed across 26 provinces in China, connecting to 211 prefecture-level cities.
On October 9th, the cumulative battery swaps for NIO users have reached 30 million times. According to official data, NIO has provided a total of 1.55 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to users, resulting in a cumulative reduction of 891,693 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. As of October 9th, 2023, NIO has established a network of 1,937 battery swap stations nationwide.

In addition, Shen Fei, Senior Vice President of NIO Energy, recently responded to some car owners’ concerns about whether the battery swapping stations would replace new batteries with old ones. He stated that there is no distinction between new and old batteries; rather, it is a matter of healthy or unhealthy batteries. As long as the batteries are swapped out from the swapping stations, they will definitely be healthy and safe.
Shen Fei said, ‘Batteries can be new or old, but they are just containers for electricity. The value is obtained by making use of the electricity in the container. This is similar to a gas cylinder.’
At the same time, Shen Fei said that battery swapping is equivalent to (cars) having a lifetime warranty, as each battery swap will involve checking the chassis and batteries. For cars that cannot undergo battery swapping, if there are issues with the batteries, the cost of maintenance and replacement would be extremely high. This is because power batteries can depreciate or pose safety risks due to degradation and usage environment.
