After two seasons, Paramount+ has canceled its live action Halo adaptation. The series premiered in March 2022 and its second season aired in February 2024.

According to Deadline, Amblin Television, Xbox and 343 Industries are currently looking for a new home for the Halo series.

“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward,” said a Paramount+ spokesperson in a statement.

This is a major sea change for the series. Halo’s premiere set a viewership record on Paramount+. Additionally, Halo was the most in-demand video game IP in 2022 according to Parrot Analytics.

However, the series clearly did not manage to sustain enough of this audience for Paramount+ to renew it for a third season. The series currently has a 7.3 out of 10 on IMDB.

“We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future. We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world,” said a 343 Industries spokesperson.

While Halo searches for a new home, other video game adaptations are resonating with both audiences and critics. Amazon Prime’s Fallout adaptation received 16 nominations for the 2024 Emmys.
