With the Galaxy Tab Active5, Samsung will soon be offering a comparatively compact, extremely robust tablet that packs an 8-inch, 120 Hz fast display with support for a Samsung S Pen into a waterproof and drop-protected housing.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 is marketed as a smaller, cheaper but also somewhat less well-equipped alternative to the Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro (approx. 590 euros on Amazon), as the new tablet uses an LCD with a diagonal of just 8 inches, which achieves a brightness of 540 nits and a frame rate of 120 Hz.
Practical: The screen can be operated with an S Pen, which allows the tablet to be used with gloves. The dedicated navigation buttons under the display and the programmable action button on the right-hand side also make it easier to use the tablet with gloves on. “Wet Touch” allows the touchscreen to be used even when it is wet. The housing is a little chunky but is IP68-certified and, therefore, waterproof and also protected against dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme heights, and falls.
The tablet is based on the Samsung Exynos 1380, a 5 nm ARM chip from 2023, which combines four ARM Cortex-A78 performance cores with clock frequencies of up to 2.4 GHz, with four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 2.0 GHz. Samsung also installs 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory, which can be expanded by up to 1 TB using a microSD memory card.
The 5,050 mAh battery can be charged via USB-C or pogo pins to simplify fleet use. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the home button. Samsung promises four major Android updates and five years of security patches for the tablet.
Prices and availability
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 is expected to be launched in Germany in mid-January. The model without a modem will be available for a recommended retail price of 479 euros, while the 5G version will cost 579 euros.
