Sony may not market its new PlayStation 5 as a ‘Slim’, but it appears to be this generation’s Slim model in all but name. An initial comparison has visualised how much space Sony has saved with its 30% footprint reduction between variants before new models start shipping.
A few days ago, Sony announced two new PlayStation 5 (PS5) models, which it sells as the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. As expected, Sony has designed the new models with a modular disc drive, which can be added to the Digital Edition at a later date for US$79. Other changes from the original PS5 include split console plates, a second USB Type-C port, more storage and a lighter overall build.
Sony is not marketing its new consoles as the PS5 Slim though, which may explain why size comparisons were missing from its press release. Nonetheless, it appears that the new PlayStation will be visibly more compact than its predecessor when Sony begins shipping units. Based on the 3D modelling of Redditor u/NatureCertain, the PS5 is a new Slim in all but name, at least in relative terms.
For context, the regular PS5 measures approximately 390 x 260 x 104 mm. In comparison, the new Digital Edition comes in at 358 x 216 x 96 mm. While the difference in dimensions is not huge in one direction, the combined reductions yield a 30% smaller footprint. However, it is worth keeping in mind that Sony’s new vertical stand, which it sells separately, is wider than the one that ships with the original PS5. Please see our launch article for more details about Sony’s changes between variants.
