Telekom T Tablet review

Telekom T Tablet review

5G bargain. Telekom relies on its own smartphones ā€“ and now tablets as well. The T Tablet has made its entrance and relies fully on mobile data. Thanks to its 5G capabilities, the device will supposedly always be connected. Furthermore, its collaboration with Google assures slim software and long-lasting support. Hit the jackpot?

Benedikt Winkel, šŸ‘ Daniel Schmidt (translated by Daisy Dickson), Published 09/28/2023 šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ

Telekom wants a slice of the pie when it comes to mobile end devices. Following theĀ T PhoneĀ and theĀ T Phone Pro, it has now released the T Tablet. the 10.4-inch tablet with an MRSP of around US$230 is by no means a high-end device, but its 5G connectivity, dual SIM and three years worth of monthly safety patches are certainly a good start within this price range.

Most of the tablets in this price range can only connect via WiFi ā€“ it is not often that they can make use of LTE. In turn, its 5G connection is a unique feature of the T Tablet. Usually, you have to pay at least double for devices with this mobile standard. Ā

The T Tablet can only be had in one size, configuration and color: with a 10.4-inch display, 128 GB storage and 6 GB RAM in ā€œDark Shadowā€. The actual manufacturer of the device is Wingtech but Telekom brands it and sells it as its own.

Note: The manufacturer may use components from different suppliers including display panels, drives or memory sticks with similar specifications.

Telekom has utilized a mix of materials on the T Tablet. The back which also reaches around the short sides is made from aluminum. In turn, its frame is made from plastic ā€“ Telekom hasnā€™t revealed any information on what protective display glass is used.

The front-facing camera sits on one of the long sides, the power and volume buttons are on the top and the SIM slot is on the bottom. Both of the stereo speakers are situated on the short sides. The T Tablet is IP52 certified and a seal around the SIM slot suggests it is at least a bit protected against water. On the other hand, pressing down on the back of the device leads to air being audibly expelled from the device.Ā

Aside from the back being able to be pressed in, the tabletā€™s stability is good. The device also seems to not be too sensitive when it comes to scratches. The buttons, however, have a bit of give. The camera ensemble on the back protrudes a little ā€“ when you type on the tablet when it is placed on a table, only the bottom left area wobbles a bit.

Telekom has installed aĀ MediaTek Dimensity 700Ā SoC in combination with anĀ ARM Mali-G57 MP2Ā graphics unit and 6 GB RAM into the device. This configuration features the same components as theĀ T Phone Pro. Its 128-GB storage can be expanded via a microSD card.

Buyers of the T Tablet unfortunately have to make do without an audio jack. Its USB-C connection is 2.0 standard, the device doesnā€™t support picture output via a USB cable, and exFAT and NTFS are also not supported. The device achieved a transfer rate ofĀ 23.88 MB/s in our copying test.

Telekom originally announced that the T Tablet would be NFC enabled ā€“ in an earlier version of this review, this was also stated. When we asked the manufacturer, it stated that this isnā€™t the case. The T Tablet doesnā€™t have NFC as was stated in a previous version of this review.

The T Tabletā€™s storage can be expanded via a microSD card. The device can accept cards up to 2 TB in size. At the same time, the exFAT standard isnā€™t supported. In our test using theĀ AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 as a reference card, the Telekom tablet did quite well.

Its transfer speed is considerably quicker than that of theĀ Xiaomi Redmi PadĀ or theĀ Blackview Tab 12 Pro. Only theĀ Samsung Galaxy Tab A8Ā was in a league of its own, achieving transfer speeds almost three times as fast. Especially when compared to the Redmi Pad, the T Tablet scored with stable data rates.

Telekom has stated that the tablet was developed in collaboration with Google. As a result, the manufacturer has relied on stock Android. We were happy to see that no bloatware is installed onto the device. Ex works, Google Kids Space is installed, as well as a selection of books, apps and films especially for children. In order to use these contents, you have to create a separate account for your child.Ā

Swiping from left to right doesnā€™t take you to Google cards ā€“ instead, it takes you to Google Entertainment Space. It displays films and series from streaming sites, games, books and podcasts from your own library or from providers you use.

According to the manufacturer, the T Tablet will be supplied with monthly safety patches over the course of three years. In the fourth year, they will be delivered quarterly. The tablet will also receive some major updates ā€“ according to the manufacturer, it is planned to receive Android 14 and 15 updates. Certification for the ā€œAndroid Enterprise Recommendedā€ program is currently underway.

When it comes to WiFi transfer rates, the test field all lies quite close together. In combination with our reference router, theĀ Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000, the T Tablet just came out on top. In addition, its transfer rates were stable. Although, it only supports WiFi 5.

One special feature for this price range is its mobile data support including 5G. Its reception was good in our test, although, its connection and selected network type fluctuated a little more than on many other devices. Its frequency cover is good but the tablet doesnā€™t support 5G stand-alone.

The device is dual-SIM enabled. It can support one physical Nano SIM and one eSIM.

The T Tablet supports GPS, Glonass and Galileo as satellite systems but it only makes a mono connection. Its locating is still quite good, as shown by a test trip taken alongside our reference device, theĀ Garmin Venu 2.

The tablet locates especially quickly and precisely outside. Indoors, it takes quite a while and the connection fluctuates a lot.Ā

A selfie on the Telekom T Tablet

Telekom may have installed two lenses onto the back of the T Tablet, but the 2-MP one is only utilized for depth information. The 8-MP lens acts as the tabletā€™s main camera. The lens on the front has the same resolution.

The camerasā€™ performance is totally sufficient for typical tablet use including making video calls and taking snapshots. Its main camera also depicts a nice level of detail. Unfortunately, its color accuracy isnā€™t the best. In low-light conditions, the camera quickly reaches its limit ā€“ it may not depict any grain, but dark areas simply appear black, meaning they cannot be identified at all. The T Tablet even features a so-called Pro Mode, which lets you manually set ISO, white balance, aperture and lighting corrections.

You can record video on the T Tablet at a maximum of 1080p and 30 FPS. Its sound recording is good, but the picture can quickly get quite wobbly ā€“ its autofocus and automatic lighting adjustment are a bit unreliable.

The T Tabletā€™s scope of delivery is very clearly arranged. Aside from the tablet itself, the package includes a USB cable (USB-A to USB-C), a SIM tool and a quick-start guide.

The T Tablet only comes with the legally required local guarantee.

The Telekom T Tablet relies on Googleā€™s G Board keyboard. In our test, typing without any false inputs was possible. In total, the tabletā€™s touchscreen is nice and reliable in all areas.Ā The gliding properties of the glass are unremarkable, as is its susceptibility to fingerprints.

The T Tablet doesnā€™t feature a fingerprint scanner. Aside from a pin, password or pattern, you can also unlock the device via a 2D facial scan. This makes it possible to skip the lockĀ screen entirely. However, you can unfortunately only save one scan. Furthermore, the facial unlock didnā€™t work reliably in our test ā€“ its recognition rate and speed could both be better.Ā

Subpixel array

The T Tablet has a 10.4-inch TFT LC display with an aspect ratio of 5:3. Its refresh rate is 60 Hz and this cannot be changed. During our APL18 test, we measured a maximum brightness ofĀ 512 cd/mĀ². This value places the T Tablet at the top of the comparison field.Ā

The tablet achieves this maximum brightness regardless of whether the ambient light sensor is used. The panelā€™s uneven backlighting is a little annoying, especially when it comes to displaying light content.Ā

We measured some display flickering during our test. However, its frequency of 28,520 Hz is so high that we donā€™t expect there to be any issues when using the display.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

ā„¹

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession ā€“ a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Screen flickering / PWM detected 38520 Hz

The display backlight flickers at 38520Ā Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 38520Ā Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 54Ā % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18982 (minimum: 5 ā€“ maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

The tabletā€™s color accuracy shows room for improvement. The display deviated quite a bit from the target color and grayscale values. White tones have quite a hefty blue tint. Also, the color saturation is too low. According to our Calman 2D measurements, the sRGB color space is only covered by 90.9 per cent.

Display Response Times

ā„¹

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Content remains legible outside but we would like to have seen better brightness levels in the sun, in order to better balance out reflections. The displayā€™s viewing angle stability is good.

TheĀ MediaTek Dimensity 700Ā does much better in the T Tablet than in theĀ T Phone Pro. Its everyday performance is good. Apps are booted up quickly and even multitasking poses no difficulties for the tablet. The Telekom device didnā€™t suffer any blows in the benchmarks. It performed on the same level as the comparison devices and came in second behind theĀ Redmi Pad.

You can also play current games such as PUBG Mobile on the device ā€“ its maximum supported resolution is HD. However, frame rates remain low and details are reduced when running it in HD.

The speed level of the installed storage is low. An eMMC storage is used in the T Tablet. As a result, the storage speeds are roughly on par with Samsungā€™s Galaxy Tab A8, but all other comparison devices are significantly faster.

The T Tablet has two stereo speakers, each positioned along the short sides of the tablet. Its positioning turned out not to be the best in our test, as they are quickly covered when gaming. Their maximum volume is sufficient and can provide enough sound for multiple people. However, their tone doesnā€™t have much variation and they sound quite similar to smartphone speakers.

They are missing bass and low frequencies in general and in turn, the highs are too dominant. Even full volume doesnā€™t lead the back to vibrate. The Telekom tablet doesnā€™t feature an audio jack. Sound can be output via the USB-C port or Bluetooth. The T Tablet supports the following codecs:Ā SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC V3/V4 and LHDC-V.

When compared to the rest of the class, the T Tablet has quite a high power consumption. Its values under load are especially high compared to the competition, although, we have also changed how we test this. Currently, we use the Burnout Benchmark, which strains devices more than the older Stability Test.

In idle mode, the Telekom tablet remains on the same level as theĀ Samsung Galaxy Tab A8. TheĀ Honor Pad 8Ā proved to be incredibly frugal. During this test, mobile data was deactivated, so 5G can be excluded as a consumer.

In our realistic Wi-Fi web surfing test, the T Tablet did well despite its high base consumption. It achieved a runtime of almost 13 hours and thus lasts longer thanĀ Samsungā€™s Galaxy Tab A8 and theĀ Honor Pad 8. It can be used for several days without problems in everyday use, even with an activated cellular connection.

However, the tabletā€™s long charging times are annoying. Telekom hasnā€™t included a power adapter with the T Tablet, so we connected it to a 66-watt charger. It takes five hours to charge the tablet from 0 to 100 per cent. Telekom hasnā€™t specified a fast charging standard.

Telekom T Tablet review. Test device provided by Deutsche Telekom.

Telekom has made a successful debut with its T Tablet. The device doesnā€™t have any real weaknesses ā€“ its 5G capabilities in this price range are especially impressive. Its screen may only display content at 60 Hz but in turn, it gets comparatively bright. Furthermore, the tablet benefits from stock Android and long update support.Ā

Its cameras and speakers are decent, too. Its performance is good enough for everyday use and it even manages to run current games with ease. The tabletā€™s build quality and bezels arenā€™t like those of a high-end device ā€“ but for a price of US$230, they donā€™t have to be.Ā

Complete features including 5G support and barely any gaps in its connectivity options ā€“ the T Tablet does lots of things right.

Faster charging and the option to connect headphones remain on our wish list. Aside from that, the T Tabletā€™s features are extensive and it is great value for money. TheĀ Xiaomi Redmi TabĀ offers a 90-Hz display, four speakers and slightly better performance ā€“ but it doesnā€™t feature GPS or the option to connect to mobile data. TheĀ Samsung Galaxy Tab A8Ā performs slightly worse and has less storage. In turn, it features better speakers and a more high-quality case.

At the time of writing, the Telekom T Tablet is only available via Telekomā€™s German online store. It is not yet listed at any other online retailers. The device retails for around US$230.

Technology and journalism have always come together in my past. However, it was mostly cars and motorcycles that I put under the microscope. Since my active triathlon days, Iā€™ve been a fan of sports watches and smartwatches ā€“ triathlon is history for me, but the enthusiasm for watches is still there. Thatā€™s why, in parallel to my dissertation in theology, I write at Notebookcheck mainly about smartwatches, but also about other news and technology that interests me.

Originally from Scotland, I grew up and lived in Germany until I completed my high school qualifications before moving back to Scotland to complete my university studies. Growing up bilingual led me to form a close relationship with the English and German languages, often working in the fields of teaching and translation. Most of my childhood was shaped by playing around on new consoles, computers and gadgets and getting to grips with the new craze of the internet and smartphones. This interest has stayed with me well into adulthood. Nowadays, I live in Glasgow and work as a freelance translator and digital media coordinator. I have been translating for Notebookcheck since early 2023.
