Tencent will deepen cooperation with international card organizations including Visa, Discover Global Network, and JCB, and enable their users to pay through Weixin Pay, a payment tool embedded in Tencent’s social app WeChat. Following this move, inbound travelers can use their identity certificates including passports, Two-way Permits (TWP), residence permits, and China’s green cards to access WeChat Pay and link their international cards with the payment tool. WeChat Pay already began supporting international credit cards in 2019 and introduced partial pilot merchant services for the card users in platforms including 12306 (China’s railway ticket-booking platform), JD.com (online shopping platform), and Ctrip (hotel booking platform). However, the number of pilot merchants was limited, and expansion was hindered due to long-term travel restrictions after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. [36Kr, in Chinese]
