While full Apple CarPlay support in Tesla vehicles will probably remain a pipe dream, Tesla may be preparing to add support for Apple’s AirPlay casting service. This would allow video and high-def music streaming from your iPhone while in a Tesla vehicle.
Tucked in the updated Tesla app code, decompilers found an “allowsAirPlayForMediaPlayback” string that may be indicative of upcoming Apple AirPlay support in Tesla vehicles. Elon Musk is on record hinting that Tesla may add AirPlay streaming to its vehicles, so the code string may not only be there because of the WebKit software platform underlying the Tesla app for iOS.
At the time, Elon Musk was referring to achieving better audio quality while streaming as AirPlay offers lossless audio transfer with lower latency. The ability to stream with Apple’s high-bandwidth AirPlay system instead of the somewhat finicky Bluetooth connection in Tesla vehicles would certainly be appreciated by the nearly half of the American cell phone public brandishing iPhones.
Furthermore, AirPlay allows for streaming videos as well, so one can cast footage during a boring charging session from the comfort of their own iPhone, for instance. Needless to say, the eventual addition of Apple AirPlay can’t be a substitute for a full-fledged Apple CarPlay infotainment system support in Tesla vehicles, but that is probably never going to happen, so Tesla owners and passengers could at least enjoy the addition of AirPlay support.
There are other changes in the default Tesla app, too, such as new icon visuals, as well as the potential ability to play Tesla’s Sentry Mode videos in the app, instead of having to record it on a dedicated USB thumb drive first, as the process stands now.
