The groundbreaking ceremony for Tesla’s Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory took place this afternoon in the new Lingang area of Shanghai. The factory covers an area of about 200,000 square meters and is located near Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory, making it Tesla’s first energy storage super factory project outside the United States.
Tom Zhu, Senior Vice President of Tesla, stated that the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory is another significant investment project in China by Tesla, following the Shanghai Super Factory, in the ten years since Tesla entered China.
At present, Tesla’s energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack. The Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory will mainly produce the large-scale commercial energy storage battery Megapack for the global market.
According to Tesla’s official website, the Megapack is a large battery that uses an iron-lithium battery developed by CATL. It can store and supply energy, helping to stabilize the power grid and prevent power outages, thereby improving the infrastructure for sustainable energy.
Tesla claims that each Megapack battery can store more than 3MWh of energy, meeting the electricity needs of 3,600 households for one hour. The annual production capacity of this Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory is expected to be 40GWh, equivalent to 10,000 Megapack batteries, with its products covering the global market.
